Morningstar Woollen on Bowen Island, BC is seeking a Farm Manager/Farm Hand!

ABOUT Morningstar Woollen

We produce high quality wool, breeding stock, meat, poultry, a bit of fruit and flowers.
Our farm in on a hill side. Most tasks are done by hand, but we do have a tractor.
We do a few markets but most things are sold directly through word of mouth, social media or web site.

This is a family farm. Appropriate conduct is expected at all times.

We farm regeneratively and have a passionate interest in biodynamics.
Main goal is to sequester carbon.

DESIRED QUALITIES

Hardworking, sense of humour, polite (particularly in the company of children) curious, patient, patient, patient – kind and gentle when handling livestock (although not a push over haha) ?
Follows instructions but independent and shares insights or ideas. New ideas will always be heard but may not be implemented.

JOB TASKS

  • Irrigate and harvest crops (flowers and small veggie)
  • Feed and tend livestock and poultry some days
  • Assist in performing breeding activities of farm animals
  • Operate and maintain farm machinery and equipment
  • Follow food safety and security and animal bio-security procedures
  • Detect disease and health problems in crops, livestock, and poultry
  • Examine produce for quality and prepare for market
  • Set and monitor water lines, air flow and temperature in barns, pens, and chicken coops
  • Maintain or assist in the maintenance of facilities and farm infrastructure including cleaning stables, barns, barnyards, and pens.

As well as more advanced opportunities:

  • Analyzing existing operations, crops, livestock, and financial documents and recommending improvements.
  • Preparing plans and schedules for planting and harvesting.
  • Perform tests on soil and water.
  • Scheduling repairs, maintenance, and replacement of equipment and machinery.
  • Handling the marketing and sale of products produced on the farm like fruit, vegetables, meat, and flowers.
  • Assisting with the recruitment and training of new staff members.
  • Collaborating to prepare budgets and financial reports / applications

JOB DETAILS

Term: ideally start on or before March 1 2022
Hourly to start – could lead to full time permanent for the right person

Hours per week: 10-15hrs per week to start

Wage: $20/hr but lots of opportunity for incentives
