Big Rock Ranch in 100 Mile House, BC is seeking a Farm Hand!
Big Rock Ranch
Big Rock Ranch is a 148-acre farm, a short 15 minute drive from the historic town of 100 Mile House, in Buffalo Creek BC. Here we grow many varieties of fruits and vegetables on 1 acre, raise heritage chickens for eggs and meat on pasture, care for our 2 hives of honey bees, have 3 lovely horses, 2 awesome farm dogs and a fierce little kitty. We sell our produce, eggs and meat at the South Cariboo Farmers Market, the Clearwater Farmers Market, and to local restaurants/grocery stores from Spring to Fall every year.
Big Rock Ranch is a family run farm where sustainability and ecological practices are at it’s core. We believe strongly in keeping our food as close to it’s source as nature intended, with a large focus on animal welfare and soil health. We feel strongly about building community, our local economy and supporting it by investing locally. Here we raise heritage chickens free range rotationally on pasture, invest in the health of our soils with low till practices and lots of compost, and are focused on environmentally aware farming practices. We are not certified organic as of yet but plan to follow through on the certification process and currently use organic methods on farm.
We are looking for someone who has a good work ethic, isn’t afraid of hard physical work, and is willing to work in all weather; someone who can work in a team as well as independently and can be self motivated when it comes to completing tasks. Experience working on a farm, with farm machinery, and carpentry skills are all great assets but not necessary. Ideally someone who’s invested and interested in farming as a whole.
On a week to week basis we will be prepping beds, seeding, transplanting, cultivating, pruning, harvesting, packing, selling at markets, building farm projects, rotationally moving our pastured chickens, checking our bee hives, etc
Term: We are currently looking for someone to start as soon as possible and would go into October 2019, if the position worked out well we’d be looking to fill a permanent position starting back up in March 2019 for a full season of work from March 2020-October 2020, with an option to stay on living at the farm throughout the off season.
Hours: Depending on what we worked out for hours they could be 4-8hrs daily, 5 days a week.
Wage: We’re currently offering full room, board and training in exchange for 4-5 hrs of work a day, with option to work longer for extra pay at $13/hr. We also have an option to make more off farm income working at our local brewery part-time.
