Firmly Rooted in Belgrave, Ontario is seeking an Assistant Farm Manager, a Wash/Pack House Manager, and a Farmers Market Manager for the 2022 season!

ABOUT Firmly Rooted

HUMAN SCALE, BIOINTENSIVE, ORGANIC FARM – 2022 SEASON

Firmly Rooted is a 3.5-acre organic market garden located in Belgrave, Ontario, 30 minutes from beautiful Lake Huron. We provide 4 seasons of quality, healthy produce to our local community through 2 vibrant farmers markets, a 200+-member, multi-season, customizable Farm Share program, as well as to a variety of local restaurants.

We specialize in providing a variety of salad greens year-round by utilizing greenhouses as well as in the field production, while also growing a diverse array of vegetables and some fruits. We use intensive, low-tillage farming practices and utilize cover crops and other soil building techniques to produce high quality vegetables, healthy soil, and a beautiful and diverse vegetable farm. We keep bees for pollination and hobby purposes, and provide insect and pollinator habitat throughout the farm. We are also currently establishing a permaculture orchard. The diverse crops and hands-on production methods provide an enjoyable, fast paced and ever-changing working environment.

We are seeking 3 hardworking, motivated and enthusiastic individuals to join us for the 2022 growing season.

General Notes:
Applicants for all positions should be physically fit (able to lift 40lbs as well as squat, kneel, bend etc), be able to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and have some sort of previous experience with outdoor physical labour. Previous farm experience is very highly preferred, however, if you are extremely keen and feel you are a good fit without experience, please apply. A full G driver’s license is also preferred.

  • Have dependable transportation to get to work on time (8:00 AM).
  • Be able to commit to staying for the duration of their position
  • Be able to lift up to 40 lbs, be physically fit and work in a variety of walking, bending, crouching, and kneeling positions.
  • Be able to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and have some sort of previous experience with outdoor physical labour.
  • Have strong attention to detail and be able to complete repetitive tasks.
  • Provide their own comfortable gear to work in, and be willing to work in all weather conditions
  • Work well as a team member and independently.
  • Be a kind, interesting, human being.
  • A full G driver’s license is preferred

JOB TASKS

All positions will include, but are not limited to the following tasks:

  • Transplanting vegetable seedlings
  • Trellising and pruning tomatoes and cucumbers in the greenhouse
  • Hoeing and hand weeding
  • Hand harvesting vegetables
  • Washing and packaging vegetables
  • Preparing for market, packing orders

Specific responsibilities for each position are listed below:

1. ASSISTANT FARM MANAGER: early April – December, Monday – Friday, 8:00-5:00

We are ready to share the management of our successful farm business. We are looking for an experienced farmer who is interested in working with farm owners to lead a team of farmers to meet farm objectives, and to learn important farm planning and administrative tasks.

  • Do you have 2 years minimum experience on vegetable farms?
  • Have you mastered basic farm tasks (harvesting, weeding, transplanting, etc.) and are ready for your next challenge?
  • Are you confident leading staff, and providing training and feedback?
  • Are you ready to participate in the behind the scenes stuff that makes a farm function- harvest planning, farm share management, and customer communication to name a few?

2. WASH STATION MANAGER: early April – December, Monday – Friday, 8:00 – 5:00

We are looking for a farmer to run an incredibly important part of the farm: the wash station. This farmer, with support, is responsible for ensuring the cleanliness, quality, and uniformity of produce leaving the farm. They also maintain the organization and inventory of the walk in cooler’s, and lead any portioning, and packing activities for the 200+ member farm share, and weekly restaurant deliveries. Finally, they would be responsible for ensuring the wash station is kept clean and orderly. The wash station manager would also participate in other general farm tasks as outlined above.

3. FARMERS MARKET MANAGER: mid May- mid October (minimum, opportunity for earlier start and later finish available), Tuesday – Saturday

We are looking for a farmer who thrive at farmers markets, one who enjoys engaging with customers, creating beautiful displays, and is highly comfortable maneuvering a trailer. This farmer needs to be available Friday evenings and Saturday mornings with few exceptions.

  • Are you excited by the hustle and bustle of the market?
  • Are you comfortable calculating totals, and making change?
  • Do you love chatting with the people that eat the food you’ve worked hard to grow, and, ideally, do you actually love to cook and eat veggies and therefore provide ideas and recommendations to our customers?

Wage: All skills staff start at $16.00/ hour, however, wages will be commensurate with experience.

Each staff member is entitled to vegetables as well.
