Fresh Valley Farms in Armstrong, BC is seeking a Farm Hand!

Fresh Valley Farms produces certified organic beef, pork, chicken, and turkey on pasture for sale in a monthly mixed meat CSA box. We’re in our 8th year of the current incarnation of the business, but the farm has been in the family for 99 years! This is a multi-generational farm, with grand-parents, parents, the primary operators, and their children, all living and working on the land.
We farm two quarter sections that are mostly forested, with about 80 acres of arable land in a mix of perennial and annual forages, as well as growing certified organic raspberries and garlic for sale in addition to a large house garden, and a small (growing) assortment of fruit trees. We are a vertically integrated operation and process our poultry in a licensed abattoir on-site, and then selling all of our products direct to consumers.

We are certified organic with the North Okanagan Organic Association, where we actively volunteer in the organic community. While we have been farming without chemicals for the duration of our farming career, making the transition to fully certify has allowed us to fully align with our principles, and support other certified organic farms when we purchase feed for our animals. We farm regeneratively using mobile electric fencing for rotations and a mixture of forages to minimize bare ground, and prevent over grazing. On our farm we see not only a pasture or field, but a habitat for wild flora and fauna to occupy alongside our grazing livestock.

We are looking for a self-motivated individual who gains satisfaction from working hard on something they believe in, just as we do. Being solution-oriented is at the essence of many farm jobs!

The ideal candidate would have confidence in their physical strength, be comfortable around animals, and be able to adapt to various jobs with ease. We appreciate working with people who recognize their strengths, but who are able to ask for direction when needed. This is an ideal position for someone who is interested in working long-term in the livestock industry and is looking for a variety of experiences in the field.

From daily farm chores, to cleaning the brooder barn and helping to sort hogs or castrate piglets the ideal candidate will help us with a broad array of tasks. Packing orders, managing inventory, and possibly even doing some work on the website/webstore and newsletter, depending on the candidates skills. Tasks will be everything from doing repairs and maintenance and construction, to moving mobile electric fending and ensuring that systems are clean and functioning.

In addition to work on the farm there is also periodic work in the abattoir processing chickens and turkeys and doing value-added butchery, packaging, and labeling. Other tasks could include taking photographs around the farm and posting to social media.

Term: Starting in May this position would be available until the end of October, and possibly beyond.

Hours per week: 25 to 35 hours, more work available for self-motivated workers

Wage: Starting wage would be $18/hr, with possible increases up to $22/hr contingent on skills demonstrated here on the farm
