Community Place Garden & Horse Lake Coop Farm in 100 Mile House, BC are seeking a Summer Student Garden Worker!

ABOUT Community Place Garden & Horse Lake Coop Farm

The South Cariboo Sustainability Society and Horse Lake Farm Coop obtained a Federal Grant for a Summer Student to work in the community garden (Community Place Garden or CPG) and Horse Lake Farm. CPG is a town-sized lot in 100 Mile House where we grow vegetables and provide a green space for local community activities as well as the elementary school next door also uses it as part of its program. Horse Lake Farm is a 160 acre mixed farm that produces vegetables and sheep and beef for sale at the local farmers market, its members and to the local community. Other years the student has worked one day per week at the CPG, one day at the farmers market and three days at the Horselake farm. This schedule is flexible.

Community Place Garden provides vegetables at no cost to the needy and Horselake Farm has a cooperative philosophy with the farm owned by local people and selling local organic food to local people.

DESIRED QUALITIES

  • Must be able to follow through with directions while working independently or with volunteers
  • Comfortable with people asking questions about the garden
  • Capable of solving problems and knowing when to ask for help

Requirements:

  • Starting or returning to school in September 2023
  • Preference give tn to those pursuing a career in landscaping, horticulture, agricultural sciences, or working closely with people
  • 15-30 years old

JOB TASKS

General farm labour, without large-scale equipment. Could also involve operating at the Farmers Market and generally dealing with the public at the Community Garden. If the student is interested it could involve creating gardening guides explaining growing techniques for vegetables, composting, etc.

Term: Starts beginning of June for 9 weeks.

Hours per week: 15-30 hours per week. Schedule negotiable.

Wage: $15.65
