Hummingbird Farm near Nelson, BC is seeking a Farm Intern for the 2019 season!

About Hummingbird Farm

Hummingbird Farm is certified organic (KOGS#84) and grows food and flowers. We are located in the scenic Slocan valley on the Slocan river, 30 min from Nelson and Castlegar BC.

Desired Qualities

We are looking for an individual who is hard-working, physically fit, and is enthusiastic about sustainable organic farming. Day to day work is busy, intense, challenging but is also rewarding as we harvest beautiful flowers, herbs, fruits and vegetables for 2 grocery stores in nearby Nelson and Castlegar, and the farmers market in Nelson.

Good communication is a must, as is the use of common sense, the confidence to make decisions and a willingness to go above and beyond. Education Opportunities

Our farm focuses on cut flower, herb, fruit and vegetable production. You can learn all aspects of organic small scale farming and organic systems including planting, cultivating, harvesting, soil health, composting/mulching, and saving seeds. The seasonal scope of work includes preparing beds for planting, planting seeds/transplants, harvesting, deadheading flowers, mulching/weeding, watering/feeding, weeding, scouting for pests, weeding.

There are a variety of other opportunities including equipment maintenance, building projects, fencing, mowing, etc.

Eligibility

You will need to be a full time student in the 2018-19 academic year and returning to full time studies in the fall of 2019. You must be legally entitled to work in Canada and be at least 18 years of age. This is the perfect job experience for an individual pursuing education in an related agricultural or science field. You need to be physically fit, able to work outdoors in sun or rain.

Internship Details

Term: Late April /the beginning of May to the end of August (we are looking for a 16 week commitment). 

HoursWe expect a minimum of 30 and a maximum of 40 hours of work per week. 

Wage: $15 per hour, 30 hours a week.

Accommodation: If you need housing we can assist with some local options.
