EVENT RECAP: Farm Tour and Potluck at Rosy Farms

Posted by Marsha Shack on August 14, 2024

Twenty curious farmers and customers gathered on the sunny afternoon of August 10th for a tour of Rosy Farm, a 27 acre organically managed Haskap farm north of Edmonton, North Saskatchewan River and Treaty 6 territory. The tour was hosted by Andrew Rosychuk, the owner of Rosy Farms. Founded in 2014, Rosy Farms is certified organic and produces nine varieties of haskaps using regenerative agriculture practices, including incorporating native plants into their shelterbelt and between orchard rows.
The tour began with a brief history of the farm and Andrew’s journey into farming from his horticulture diploma at Olds College.  He spent time painting a picture of what the land was like when he first bought it, where it is now and what he hopes to achieve in the future.  There were lots of questions from the tour participants and the conversation roamed through topics on business models, soil biology and chemistry, native plant shelterbelts, regenerative agriculture principles and marketing to customers. The next stop was the U-pick rows, planted on a downhill slope to capture as much water as possible before running into the dugout. These thirsty plants have shallow roots which need two to four litres of water per day.  We got to roam through four rows with five different varieties – tundra, gem, beauty, beast and borealis. Each berry has its own juicy flavour! The tour concluded with a delightful potluck spread, including organic perogies, saskatoon biscuits and garden salads. Thank you to everyone who joined us on the tour and brought a dish to share. A BIG thank you to Andrew, Adelle and Heather at Rosy Farms for an interesting and enjoyable farm tour. Until next fruit harvest season!
