Heather Pritchard will present a talk titled: Row by Row: Recreating the Commons, Organizing Cooperative Access to Land and Food, taking place at Okanagan College, Vernon

Cost: Free
No registration required.

Profitable, sustainable and accessible food systems planning are top of mind for many in our region today. There is increasing interest in exploring how to provide young farmers and other food entrepreneurs access to training, land and infrastructure in order to bolster the local food economy and contribute to the North Okanagan food system. Planning for a farmland trust, an incubator farm, a farmers’ cooperative and a regional agri-food hub are already underway in the North Okanagan.
In this timely presentation, Ms. Heather Pritchard will share her extensive knowledge and experience in creating farmers’ co-ops and farmland trusts and offer lessons from across BC for how to strengthen regional food systems.

Ms. Pritchard lives on the Fraser Common Farm Cooperative and farms with Glorious Organics. She is the Farm Program Manager for FarmFolk CityFolk, a British Columbia non-profit group, who has supported community-based sustainable food systems for many years.
Some of her initiatives include the Young Agrarians network and the Foodlands Cooperative Trust. She is also the Chair of Slow Food Canada. In 2015, Heather received the Brad Reid Memorial Award for her outstanding contribution to the organic sector in British Columbia.

The North Okanagan Food Systems Initiative, in conjunction with the Regional District of North Okanagan, is excited to host this special presentation as we continue our own food systems planning for the North Okanagan.
