APPRENTICESHIP: Whitehorse, Yukon – Mandalay Farm

Posted by Michalina Hunter on October 14, 2021

Mandalay Farm in Whitehorse, Yukon is seeking an apprentice!

ABOUT Mandalay Farm

The farm is 20 minutes north of the city of Whitehorse, on the banks of the Yukon River. We have two flocks of Brown free range laying hens for a total if 4000 birds. Our CFIA licensed grading station allows us to sell our eggs commercially into stores, bakeries and other commercial establishments. The summer sees us growing grains and hay. Up to this winter we have cared for 50 horses that spend the summer in hunting camps.

We are a farm that believes in reducing the Yukon’s dependence on the south for our food. Local food products reduce the carbon footprint of our territory and helps to diversify the economy.

While we are not certified organic our animals are housed to organic standards.

We seek people who share our respect for our animals and producing a quality product. The right candidate would need to understand that farming in the Yukon means that the job is all encompassing and is very much like farming was in years gone by in the south.

The job is focused on the collection and grading of our eggs. When working in the grading station we all take part in labeling, grading and cleaning. Outside we move feed, deal with day to day maintenance, moving hay and straw and much more depending on the season.

The farm has always been operated as a family based farm. Jobs are learned alongside the people that preform them daily. We have manuals for policies and machinery operations. Animal husbandry is learned by doing but we have a vet consultant in the Fraser valley on contract that we send people to for courses.

We have a separate house on property

Term: We have operations year round and need 1 or 2 people starting in January.

There are opportunities for candidates to come and tour the farm and the area immediately. Airnorth has daily flights from Vancouver and 3 flights per week from Edmonton and Calgary.

Hours per week: 37.5 hours per week

Wage: Wages start at $17 to $20 per hour.
