Seeking an apprentice for the 2015 growing season, from May through October.
Slow Train Farm is small family farm which grows over an acre of vegetable crops and staple foods for their family. Their primary markets are the Quesnel and Williams Lake Farmers’ Markets and a weekly CSA vegetable bin delivery in Williams Lake.
Time is split between garden tasks and ongoing construction projects, many of them using techniques such as cob, earthbag and cordwood. This year they also hope to begin a riparian management project along the Fraser River.
As the home is still under construction, interns will be sleeping in a tent. There is a comfortable indoor space that interns can use for socializing, reading, etc. Interns and guests share all of the facilities on the site with the family. Meals are shared with the family as well. Electricity is provided by solar and wind. The family has two young children who are very present in daily life. Ideally the farm likes to host people who are inspired, motivated and wanting to homestead or start a small farm operation of their own in the future.
The family eats organic food, much of it from the garden in the summer and fall and avoids GMOs. They do eat meat, but welcome vegetarians. Unfortunately vegan diets cannot be accommodated. A modest monthly stipend will be offered to apprentice.
