Shamrock Ranch in Shamrock, Saskatchewan is seeking an apprentice(s) for the 2021 season!

About Shamrock Farm

We own a growing flock of wool sheep. We custom graze on 800 acres. We rent out land to larger local farms. We want to start seeding poly crops. We make hay and buy as needed. We practise rotational grazing through our holistic management training.

We are southwest of Moose Jaw. In the shamrock farming community. South of us is Gravelbourg.

We are a family farm. We host college and agro tourism students. We teach horsemanship, safe animal handling, and an intro holistic grazing. We include all our guests in daily activities including planning.

Desired Qualities

  • We work long hours, likely to long. We need open minded, respectful of our choices and style. A genuine interest in livestock and farm lifestyle.
  • Bonus if the applicant can weld a bit, and has equipment experience.
  • Would be nice to have the apprentice invest in animals at our farm. Like chicken, beef cows, bees etc

Apprenticeship Tasks

Daily chores. Assist with fencing, haying, manure work. Livestock maintenance. Lambing in season. Summer grazing.

We hope the apprentice will like to experiment with animals. Such as meat chickens( we have the equipment) or grass cattle, etc.

Education

In the past the college interns spend the days with us.

Additional Learning Resources

We have books, and a few videos. We like to attend field days and seasonal events.

We have several friends in holistic management who could be potential learning resources as well.

Room and Board

Depending on the applicants. And duration. We do have a second house, and an RV.

We have hosted a young family before, so kids and pets welcome. We can adjust meals accordingly for vegetarians or gluten etc

We can certainly discuss options with applicants.

We have room for a large garden

Apprenticeship Details

Duration: Lambing starts in January 25 with a new group every 17 days. But we can host most anytime of the year. We are honestly busy and active year round.

Stipend: We can discuss both an hourly rate or a land access for the intern to grow chickens, pigs, beef, etc

Hours per week: 30-40 depending on the ambition of the person or couple.
