Today we are running a 24-hour Giving Tuesday fund

Today we are running a 24-hour Giving Tuesday fundraiser to support educational programs for new and young ecological farmers. ⁠
⁠
Our programs educate, empower, and connect farmers so they can do the hard work of stewarding the environment and growing food for our communities. We believe that investing in the next generation of farmers is essential for the future of our food systems. Climate change, the rising costs of land and production, and the decreasing number of people entering the sector to grow the food we rely on make it crucial to support new farmers.⁠
⁠
Our programs provide supports that new and young farmers need at every stage of their journey, whether they are curious about farming and wondering how to start, or are an established farm looking to expand.⁠
⁠
Take it from Boma Okorosaye-Orubite, a 2022 participant in our Apprenticeship Program who spent his season at Fostering Change Farm in Manitoba. Boma’s time in our Apprenticeship Program was essential in providing the support and community he needed to get started as a farmer.⁠
⁠
“To me, Young Agrarians means community and has provided me with a farming community - people to know and meet and share desires and aspirations with. People to give advice, support, and a listening ear about my journey. I was on my own starting this process and it has been so helpful to hear about the experiences of other farmers. The YA Apprenticeship Program opened my mind and provided different perspectives and inspiration. Those stories still keep me going, now more than a year later.⁠
⁠
As someone who immigrated to Canada as an adult, I want to help other immigrants access locally-grown, quality food. I plan to provide accessible and affordable food to the community so we can be less dependent on imports. Farming is a labor of love. It has to be for people.”⁠

We are so lucky to have farmers like Boma in our network and to witness the exciting work they are doing to build resilient food systems in Canada.⁠

Huge thank you to Vancity for its generous financial support of the Business Mentorship Network (BMN) in British Columbia! ⁠

Through the BMN, farmers build their business knowledge and increase long-term viability. The BMN has supported 171 farmers to generate a 147% increase in revenues, a 98% increase in volume of food grown, and a 12% increase of land in production on average during their year in the program. ⁠

Urban permaculture farmer Terra Pombert of Sunflow

Urban permaculture farmer Terra Pombert of Sunflowers Urban Farm made the tough decision to decrease her land in production this year to concentrate on farming less land more efficiently. Her decision paid off, with customers remarking on how delicious her vegetables were all summer. Through our Business Mentorship Network, she continues to work with her mentor, Mike Kozlowski of Steel Pony Farms, to develop a crop plan for next year. ⁠

Join us for a workshop on the nuts and bolts of land access. Young Agrarians Land Linking Workshops bring together landholders and farmers seeking land to network, explore possible land matches, and learn how to navigate land sharing and lease agreements.⁠

Our B.C. Land Matching Program Manager Darcy Smith and our Okanagan Land Matcher, Pascale Schittecatte will be there to talk about how land matching supports land seekers and landholders, and share key questions to ask, legal considerations, and building and maintaining stable land agreements that are mutually beneficial.⁠

But did you know that she's also a member of several co-ops? Shirlene farms on land that is owned cooperatively, sells and distributes her seed garlic through the BC Eco Seed Co-operative, and collaboratively runs a community-shared agriculture program with other farms⁠

🌻Laura Boyd-Clowes: A market gardener, gardening teacher, local food advocate, and a dedicated member of the Cowichan Valley Co-operative Marketplace (Cow-op). With a background in Ethnobotany and many years laboring on small farms, Laura understands how important it is for working people to join together in collective action, to preserve land and nourish communities. ⁠
⁠
🌻Isabelle Morris: She was searching for committed, dedicated partners to help grow a sustainable vegetable production on her family farm in Yellow Point, and found three other farmers in search of growing space. Together, they formed Farmship Growers Cooperative in 2013 and have expanded their growing space from 2 to 14 acres. The farm has changed in size and scope over the years, but is still going strong. ⁠
