Who can relate? @shadeofmiti shares some reflections on the first years of running her own farm.

"I am super excited for the farming season next year. I'm excited for this year also but more for next year.

Last year, everything I did was a lesson in what NOT to do. So far, this year, everything has been a "oh, this works much better" and "wow, this is so much more efficient".

Today, I finished setting up most of my irrigation and planted all my cool crops. So it's time to eat ice cream and mangoes!!! Next week, I'm not doing any planting but will be getting my field ready for my okra, bittermelon and hot crops."

Rav has been sharing some great posts recently about transplanting efficiency to protect your body and avoid injury. With all those beautiful starts she'll be busy! Farming can be hard on your body so it's important to take care of yourself.

If you’re curious about viticulture, winemaking, soil science, organic grape production, or if you just want to spend a beautiful evening enjoying a lovely catered meal and wine, hanging with the Young Agrarians network.⁠

Come check out @road13vineyards newly-certified organic vineyard with us! We will tour the farm and hear from a soil scientist, viticulturist, and a winemaker about how they work together to produce delicious grapes for wine making.⁠

How’s everyone’s garlic doing? We love this ode to garlic from @axeandroothomestead!

Here are some of Angela’s tips for growing quality garlic:

“PLANTING
Plant in full sun.

Don’t overwater to prevent rotting bulbs. Instead, mulch the area with straw to retain moisture.

Plant cloves in mid October before the first frost. Also know what you’re planting. Grow soft neck varieties for storage and hard neck for larger cloves, and mainly consuming sooner than later. Elephant garlic is awesome and easy to peel. But it doesn’t last super long.

Buy quality seed.

A small sprinkle of slow release fertilizer in each hole when planting really helps out cloves as they establish roots.

GROWING
In addition to full sun and water, fertilize every 2-3 weeks with liquid kelp.

Keep weed free and avoid walking in growing areas to avoid compacting the soil.

When scapes appear on hardneck varieties, cut them before they blossom. This keeps the plant’s energy going towards the bulb and not reproducing via flower pollen.

HARVEST
Many sources say to harvest when the foliage of the plant is 2/3 yellow-brown. I don’t as this opens up the possibility of rotting bulbs! I harvest after a week or two of cutting scapes.

After harvesting, shake off excess dirt. Braid and hang softneck varieties in small groups or bundle hardneck varieties and hang. Air flow is key!

Make sure the bulbs cure for about three weeks in a dry, cool location.

After 3 weeks, de-stem, remove roots with scissors and store in braids or porous baskets.

🤩Pro Tip: Garlic is a great companion plant for broccoli, cauliflower and other brassicas. If you plant rows 12” apart, you can leave space to interplant these crops in the spring.”

Hello I’m Clayton! I joined the YA Apprenticeship Program with an aspiration to learn the reins of starting my own ranch and better understand regenerative agricultural methods through hands-on experience. This year I am partaking in the Young Agrarians Apprenticeship Program with @thehomestead2015 in Goodfare, Alberta. My ultimate dream is to create a ranch that showcases regenerative agriculture and its methods, to create a truly immersive agricultural tourism operation. One that re-ignites people’s connection of learning how their food gets from farm, to the table.
