Meet Sara Kivioja and Stephen Donald of Home Acres
Meet Sara Kivioja and Stephen Donald of Home Acres Farm in Burntland Brook, New Brunswick. Sara and Stephen started their farm from the ground up during the pandemic in response to collapsing food distribution systems. They took the leap, moved to a different province, and had to do without in order to make it work. To their surprise, their new community rallied around them and came to their aid.

"I initially did not want to ask our community for help, since I knew many people were financially struggling in today's economy. But we were BLOWN away by our community's support. Everyone was so kind and generous, and genuinely wanted our farm's fundraiser to succeed," says Sara.

Meet landholder Jack and farmer Greet, who were matched through the B.C. Land Matching Program (BCLMP)! Prior to joining the program, Jack was farming on his property in Kelowna, but he was hoping to slow down and finally retire. In 2023, Jack was matched to Greet, a young veggie grower with a nearby farm stand. With the help of the program, Jack and Greet established a secure five-year lease with options to renew, providing Greet with security for his farm business and Jack a well-deserved rest.

“I had to retire from farming, but I still wanted the land to be used agriculturally. The BCLMP worked really well by finding a farmer to take over when I would've had difficulty finding someone. Anyone looking to lease their land, I would wholeheartedly recommend the BCLMP.” - Jack, landholder

“Everyone from Young Agrarians (YA) and the BCLMP that I’ve met have been so wonderful and eager to help, and have made the process of working with landholders so smooth. Without the BCLMP, I would still be searching for farmland, would just be dreaming of farming. Big thumbs up for this program!”- Greet, farmer

Join us at the BC Mixer in Penticton on February 2
Join us at the BC Mixer in Penticton on February 28 to March 1 for a session on Indigenous food hubs with Dixon Terbasket and Hannah Field of Ntamtqen Community Garden and Food Hub!

Dixon’s passion for organic farming traces back to 1978 when he embarked on his journey with Similkameen Native Organic Produce, a pioneering venture in certified organic farming during the 1980s. His dedication to organic farming led him to establish a comprehensive wholesale distribution and marketing system, as well as a retail outlet, promoting access to healthy, locally grown produce within the community.

Following a 15-year hiatus dedicated to land management for the Okanagan Nation, Dixon returned to his roots in farming, driven by a deep-seated commitment to community well-being and sustainable food systems. Dixon channels his wealth of experience and expertise into managing the Ntamtqen Community Garden and Food Hub on a full-time basis.

Hannah serves as the Ntamtqen Community Garden and Food Hub Coordinator, entrusted with a comprehensive range of responsibilities crucial to the project’s success. Hannah’s leadership shines as she navigates the complexities of managing the garden and food hub activities.

Hannah and Dixon will be joined in this presentation by Coven Terbasket and Humaira Hamid, both members of the Ntamtqen team.

Meet Max Berukoff, owner and operator of Berukoff
Meet Max Berukoff, owner and operator of Berukoff Farms in Fruitvale, BC! Berukoff Farms is a 130-acre cow-calf operation based near Champion Lakes Provincial Park. Five years ago Max started ranching with just a few cows, continuing a ranching tradition that runs deep in his family. The B.C. Land Matching Program helped Max to access additional land, allowing him to scale his operation to a commercial size.

“Working with the B.C. Land Matching Program was seamless: everything was well-organized, easy to follow, and honestly, just a pleasure. The fact that it came at no cost was an added bonus. I’ll definitely be using the program again as I work on expanding my herd and bringing more high-quality meat to my community.”

Meet Chungyun Kim, owner and operator of Thank You
Meet Chungyun Kim, owner and operator of Thank You Farm! After moving to Canada and prior to farming full-time, Chungyun was a small business owner and kept chickens, ducks, and goats as a hobby. He reached out to the B.C. Land Matching Program in 2024, after deciding to turn his interest in agriculture into a full-time career. Chungyun was matched to a landholder who was also interested in small livestock, and now Chungyun runs Thank You Farm on 3.5 acres in Langley, producing free-range eggs for his local community.

“Without this program, I would not have been able to get started in agriculture–I have yet to find another program that would have helped me get started in farming. I am currently trying to wind down my previous small business so that I can focus entirely on agriculture. This program has helped me to realize my dream of farming and I would recommend it to anyone.”
