LAND OPPORTUNITY: Space for flowers, medicinal plants, or beekeeping on an established mixed farm – Duncan, BC

We always have new land opportunities coming into our inventory, some of which aren’t on our blog yet! Get in touch with a Land Matcher at bclmp@youngagrarians.org to learn about the latest opportunities and to access free B.C. Land Matching Program services in your region.

ABOUT THE LAND

Conveniently located 10 minutes from downtown Duncan, this beautiful 35-acre property offers great potential for market gardening, flowers and beekeeping. Much of the land has been cleared to create several large fields, and the rest of the acreage is wooded.

Options for cultivatable space include a garden plot (50 x 100 feet) located within an existing commercial growing space and several raised beds in a mixed nut and fruit food forest. The commercial growing space is flat, cleared and grassy, with a minor slope and full sun exposure. This space is also set up with irrigation infrastructure and is located close to a power source. The food forest is a mix of full sun and dappled shade, with established perennial beds and some overgrown raised beds that will be ready for use after some clearing. The landholder also has a 6-acre truffle orchard, mixed free-range poultry, and many more exciting projects to come.

There is room to expand the cultivable space – the landholder is open to discussing additional areas of the farm that could be either independently or collaboratively managed.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

This is a great opportunity to take over a market garden plot, work alongside experienced farmers, and sell through an established customer base.

The landholder is a dynamic farmer with a passion for perennials and a desire to balance food production with ecological conservation on the farm. They would love to collaborate with a farmer who is interested in producing flowers, honey, or herbs, to complement their existing mix of pastured eggs, fruit and vegetables. The incoming farmer could sell through the existing farm stand and special order groups. The landholder would also be interested in discussing arrangements that incorporate part-time farm hand or farm management work.

There is some infrastructure with storage capacity, as well as a small wash-pack space and walk-in cooler. The landholder is open to additional buildings being constructed on the land. There is also room for an RV or tiny home, with potential for access to amenities.

ABOUT THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

Given that there may be multiple farmers living and farming on-site, this opportunity would be well-suited to farmers who enjoy sharing space and collaborating with others. The ideal candidate(s) would be community-minded, cooperative and keen on regenerative land stewardship.

This is a great opportunity for new farmers who would value developing their growing skills in a semi-turnkey environment. So, it would be ideal for a couple or individual working part-time or dipping their toe into farming. Ideally, the landholder would love to incorporate the incoming farmer(s) into their community, and explore the possibility of working together long-term.
