ABOUT The Backwoods Farm
Our farm is all about growing efficiently, using organic, No-Till techniques to yield incredible quality and quantity of market vegetables and fruit. Through 12 seasons we have honed our human-scale practices on a small, sunny plot surrounded by arbutus and fir forest. We sell at 2 farmers markets, 2 restaurants, a CSA and a large grocery store every week from April-October. Our crops include Greens, Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Carrots,Peppers, Radishes, Beets, Cilantro, Basil, Parley, Dill. Pac Choi, Potatoes, Broccoli, Strawberries, Raspberries, Apples, zucchini and winter squash!
Salt Spring is a beautiful, natural paradise with a peace-loving community and outdoor adventures abound. The Farm is situated a 5 minute drive from both the ocean and swimmable lakes. After work we regularly enjoy relaxing at the lake or at one of the beaches nearby. You can also ride downhill or road bikes, rock climb, fish, kayak or hike the dozens of mountain and oceanside trails.
The work we do is not just a way to feed our community and ourselves, but also a political action towards the world that we want to see for our children. Small, sustainable and regenerative farming is integral to the future of our species and we hope to attract farmers with similar values and ambitions!
Our farm is on Penelekut First Nations Traditional Land, also known as the north-eastern side of Salt Spring Island. We live and work in a special natural environment and building our relationship with the Indigenous peoples of these lands is very important to us.
DESIRED QUALITIES
- We expect the applicants for our positions to be enthusiastic about physical work in all weather conditions and be prepared for parts of work days with repetitive tasks.
- Bringing a sense of urgency to farm tasks is a necessity on a human-scale farm like ours.
- We love to have a good chin-wag (chat) as long as jobs on the farm are completed efficiently!
- We also need you to be able to work smoothly with 2 – 3 of our farm team members while following instruction and accepting feedback.
POSITION TASKS
You will learn the complete playbook of our farm that has been refined for over a decade. This includes:
- Nursery plant production and management
- No till Soil preparation and testing
- No till Bed preparation and turnovers
- Direct seeding with various push seeders
- Transplanting by hand and with Paperpot Transplanter
- Greenhouse tomato and cucumber production and trellising
- Cultivating and weeding efficiently and effectively
- Washing and processing vegetables
- How to setup a beautiful and inviting market stand
- business management
- How to manage a farm team
- Creating a positive work environment
POSITION DETAILS
Term: Flexible start date between March 15 – April 15, 2026.
Hours per week: 35-40 hrs/week.
Wage: Inexperienced Farm Hands – $23//hr – 35hours/week; Experienced Farm Hands- $25-30/hr – 30 to 40 hours/week
Our farm hands and apprentices enjoy complimentary vegetables and fruit from our gardens which is one of the best perks of being a farmer!
