FARM JOB: Galiano Island, B.C. – Galiano Conservancy Food Forest, Sustainable Food Systems Technician

Galiano Conservancy Food Forest in Galiano Island, B.C. is seeking a Sustainable Food Systems Technician!

ABOUT Galiano Conservancy Food Forest

The Galiano Food Forest and Nursery are located mid island on Galiano Island. The Food Forest and Nursery are surrounded by Douglas Fir forest and are a quick walk to the ocean. The Food Forest consists of hugelkulture beds with a established perennial trees, berry bushes and vines along with some annual rows, a tunnel and a greenhouse. We produce a wide variety of berries, herbs, and edible flowers along with annual vegetables that we sell to local restaurants and at our farm stand. We also grow, harvest, dry and blend the herbs for our tea company-Forest Garden Tea. The majority of the space is watered by drip irrigation- the Food Forest is on a computerized system and the annual area needs to be turned on and off manually. There is also hand watering in the greenhouse, nursery and some spot watering of new plantings in the Food Forest. We use a weed wacker to clear paths, but otherwise the space is managed with hand tools.

The Sustainable Food Systems projects are a part of the Galiano Conservancy Association which started as a land trust and has grown to include ecological restoration, nature based learning and food security. Our Sustainable Food Systems encompass the environmental, social, and economic significance of sustainable agriculture. Water conservation is a priority and we water using rain water and are trialing various water saving methods such as using ollas and mulching. Our Food Forest is a multi-layered diverse garden in which every plant serves several interconnected purposes. The plants are chosen for food production, nitrogen-fixing, creating mulch for soil building, and feeding pollinators. In an effort to mimic a natural forest, the plants are grown in various layers, including: canopy, shrub, herbaceous layer, vining layer, root layer, and ground cover.
