Edible Earth Seeds is an organic vegetable seed company based in the Cowichan Valley. Our mission is to support food sovereignty on Vancouver Island through the stewardship of open-pollinated seed varieties that are well-adapted to our bio-region.
I began learning about seeds during my first farm apprenticeship in 2009, and I soon became convinced that we cannot have true food sovereignty without seed sovereignty. I learned about the great loss of biodiversity of our food crops, the move towards hybrid varieties, and genetic engineering. The solution seemed simple – grow more seed! So I started growing and saving seed from as many crops as I could.
Since then I have come to understand that growing seed is not enough: we must grow good quality seed. So that is my mission these days, to grow the highest quality seed that I can, for gardeners and farmers to grow vibrant, nutrient-dense food.
Edible Earth Seeds is a partnership between myself and Nora Arajs. We have two gardens that we tend, both in the Cowichan Valley, BC. This is our first year running the company, and we both also grow seed for Salt Spring Seeds.
We will be hosting a Young Agrarians potluck at my home farm in Glenora, where I grow an acre of seed. I am so grateful to Young Agrarians for getting this movement off the ground – we all need the support and inspiration that comes from community, and farmers are no exception!
I’m looking forward to seeing you all.
