Calling all B.C. Farmers! Do you have insights or interest in ALR regulations? Frank Niu, a master’s degree student in the program of Environment and Management at Royal Roads University, is conducting research on the Agricultural Land Reserve (the ALR) in British Columbia. The research intends to focus on the ALR‘s influence on B.C. farmers. Some compelling cases have been reported by news media in recent years, such as the Rusted Rake Restaurant, or the Petey’s Pumpkin Patch story. Attention all forage and livestock producers. in BC. The BC Ministry of Agriculture and Food is developing a Five-Year Knowledge Transfer Plan for Silvopasture in BC.  When completed, this plan will outline the priority training, demonstrations, publications and decision support tools to help BC farmers and ranchers successfully plan, implement and manage silvopastures. George Powell is under contract to coordinate the development of this plan for the Ministry. Silvopasture, is an agroforestry practice that integrates managed grazing with forage and tree production in the same land base. The primary target is farmers who are currently producing renewable energy on their farms, although non-renewable energy producers are welcome to participate as well. MEET YOUR CENTRAL B.C. COORDINATOR: Robin Hunt is a market gardener from the Cariboo Region of B.C. She is excited to join the Young Agrarians team and work with farmers around the region. She currently farms with her husband Johan Bos at Big Rock Ranch in Buffalo Creek, B.C. Here they raise free range heritage chickens rotationally on pasture, run a mixed fruit/vegetable market garden and tiny home B&B, with a large focus on animal welfare and soil health. They feel strongly about building community, their local economy and supporting it by investing locally.
