Turning beer waste into mushrooms, and mushroom waste into feed — that’s what Alex Villeneuve is doing with Ceres Solutions, a farm located in the Treaty 7 region (Olds, AB).  Alex Villeneuve was completing a Chef’s Apprenticeship at NAIT when he decided to take the Brewmaster’s Program at Old’s College. Nearly 50 people joined Young Agrarians at Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort on Sunday, February 16, 2020, for a half-day of discussions all about farming and fungi! This inaugural event solely about MUSHROOMS filled up in two days after registration opened, with a waiting list. People joined us from as far away as Armstrong, Revelstoke and Naksup. FARM THE BASIN: Beyond the Button with Mr. Mercy’s Mushrooms

Robin Mercy is the owner of Mr. Mercy’s Mushrooms. He lives and farms in Kaslo, BC with his partner Tamara and son Kirin. They produce strains appropriate for the local climate, from blue oysters and enoki in the shoulder seasons to white elms, lion’s mane, and reishi in the hotter months. Considering there is an estimated five million types of fungi, they hope to “stimulate curiosity and appetite in their clientele with an assortment of beautiful and unique gourmet varieties,” going beyond the white button mushroom.
