ABOUT THE LAND

This land opportunity is located in the community of West Creston, a rural residential area 10 minutes west of Creston, located in the Creston Valley south of Kootenay Lake and just north of the border. The property boasts several acres of cultivable land on fertile soil.

Some of the land has been converted into a market garden already with lots of free space, while other areas would need a few stumps pulled, and some fencing, to be used for cultivation or livestock. Some of the property is already fenced for livestock.

The land owners have 6 bee hives that would be available for use by the land seeker. The land has a few outbuildings, including a barn. The land has a pond as well that will be developed for aquaculture.

The land is currently farmed organically, with some vegetables, and trees being harvested. The property boasts 4 streams, 3 with water licences for irrigation if farming and gravity fed water (first on the line) from the mountain behind for the house use. There are 5 fields with different types of typography.

The garden is cleared and fenced but since there was no garden this year, it’s overgrown. It would be a suitable place for a couple of tunnel greenhouses. There is little wind and the weather is very temperate.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The land owners reside on the property. Use of the barn is allowed but the space is shared. Though they may live there part of the year, they would not interfere with anyone’s farm plans.

On-farm projects could include a fish farm, nursery or agri-tourism business. The situation is ideal for someone interested in having an organic market garden, perennials, a beekeeping operation or raising small livestock or poultry. There are water rights and no shortage.

The land owners ideally hope to find an experienced young farm couple who have a secondary off-farm income. What the land owners can offer is a tiny home (non-smokers, non-partyers) to farmers who have the skills and a commitment to build themselves a decent living and who treat animals ethically and kindly. The land owners are open to adding and improving infrastructure on the land and their values are centred around ecological practices and protecting the environment.

The land and out buildings are available for lease in whole or in part on a short-term basis to start with possibility to renegotiate if the right fit. The land owners are open to creative models of transitioning some of the land to the right farmers.
