About the project

Kanaka Bar has a vision to manage and use its land and resources to maintain a self-sufficient, sustainable, and vibrant community. Our Food Self-Sufficiency (FSS) Department has been working towards a goal of 100% of community resident food needs being met through local agriculture, community gardens, household gardens and traditional food sources. The FSS department is made up of a dedicated group of staff and community members who work in the gardens and harvesting areas, care for our livestock and coordinate food education and mentorship programs and events. There are about 50 trees in the orchard including cherries, plums, peaches, pears, and apples. There are also a variety of fruit trees in two food forests in the community.

Ashala Daniel

About Ashala Daniel

Ashala Daniel is the owner of Solstedt Organics, an off-grid farm on the West side of the Fraser river. This is her 9th season farming on this land. Her farm consists of approximately 5 acres of market gardens and 5 acres of orchards in cherries, apricots, plums, peaches, apples and pears. The orchards yield thousands of pounds of fruit each year.

Previous to coming to Lytton, Ashala farmed in Richmond, BC with two partners and together they grew food for canning and created a canning CSA. The three partners met while taking a farming course through Kwantlen Polytechnic University where they learned fruit tree management among other things.

Ashala is proud to be part of the Lytton community and hopes to be able to teach anyone who wants to know, what she knows about fruit trees.
