Today on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we recognize not just the Indigenous territories that we are on, but the harm and ongoing violence that colonization has inflicted upon Indigenous Peoples. We recognize how agriculture has been used as a tool to control Indigenous Peoples, and how current laws and policies are still actively harming Indigenous land and food systems.

On this day, we are thinking about relationships. Relationships to each other and to our ecosystems. Relationships where we recognize each other’s inherent gifts, and support each other like the soil fungi web supports grasslands, like the salmon feed tall coastal rainforests, and like compost nurtures food plants.

Meaningful relationships are at the heart of moving towards Reconciliation. They are a way beyond the extractive and industrialized culture that is causing harm for many, and escalating into multiple, on-going climate crises.

We look to Indigenous leadership to understand how to move forward.

We deeply understand as a farming organization, that the land doesn’t belong to us, we belong to the land.

We believe that in order to heal, governments must centre Indigenous worldviews that see the land and waters as relatives to care for, not as resources of profits. Indigenous Peoples represent only 5% of the global population, but protect 80% of our remaining biodiversity, which is essential for our planet.

We are meant to be in relationship with the land, taking only what we need and giving back in return. We are deeply grateful to the Indigenous peoples who are stewarding the ecosystems we rely on, despite historical and ongoing genocidal violence.

We continue to call for all levels of government to take tangible actions that enact the 94 Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Canada, and to recognize Indigenous rights and title to Crown and other lands.

FROM THE FIELD: One of the Young Agrarians 2023 apprentices, Magda, is spending the season at Carrots by Cam, an organic vegetable farm in Carseland, Alberta. Here's what Madga had to say about their last week on the farm:⁠

"This week at Carrots by Cam, some of the potato rows were flailed. This means that the leaves and stems of the plants were chopped to the ground so that the potato skins can begin to harden underground. ⁠
⁠
A few test rows of early potatoes were harvested, coming in smaller and with flakier skins than they should be. These potatoes will go to restaurants in the Calgary area, as thin-skinned potatoes don’t exactly store well. In two weeks we will dig again and check the size and skins, and repeat this until they are completely ready for fall harvest! Some early carrots and beets are also starting to see the light of day. It is rewarding to see the first “fruits of our labour“ start to come out of the field.⁠

I have learned so much about growing root veggies this summer (and about how ours end up tasting so good). It’s been a great experience so far!"⁠

Are you curious about farming, or have a friend who is? We know that farming is easy to dream about, but it can be challenging to decide whether the lifestyle is right for you.

Young Agrarians is now offering How to Start Farming: An Introductory Course for the Farm Curious - an online, community-based program that will give you the space to explore farming fundamentals, connect with the farming community, and learn about ways to get more involved in farming.

In this program, you will have the opportunity to:

🌱 Be introduced to Indigenous food systems and relationship to the land (led by = Nehiyaw/Métis Knowledge Keeper Audrey Logan, Treaty 1 Territory)
🌱 Discover how to address climate change through farming methods
🌱 Explore paths to get more involved in farming
🌱 Meet farmers and peers who are passionate about local food
🌱 Hear first-hand stories of the joys and challenges of growing food

WHEN: The next round of How to Start Farming will begin November 1, 2023 and run until November 22.

Join us in extending a warm welcome to Emi Do, our Co-op Coordinator at Young Agrarians! In the coming months, she'll be sharing content related to collaboration and cooperation as solutions for the challenges presented by our current food system.⁠
⁠
Emi Do came to co-operatives as a small-scale urban farmer trying to find a viable alternative to the dominant food distribution chain. Though her interest in agricultural co-operatives led to a PhD and an assistant professorship at Tokyo University of Agriculture, the empowerment, mutuality and solidarity underlying cooperatives sparked an interest in the co-ops as a means to democratize and transform relationships across different workplaces and contexts. ⁠
⁠
She has also been an active member of the Community Working Group Operations Team at social.coop for over two years, helping to navigate the challenging waters of online moderation cooperatively. She recently co-authored a book on the transformative potential of cooperatives entitled Cooperatives at Work. ⁠

Emi is excited to work with YA supporting farmers to help find opportunities for collaboration and fostering co-operation to solve gaps in the food system in B.C.⁠
