“In response to the preexisting food insecurities intensified by COVID-19, we are facilitating the COVID-19 Indigenous Seed Crisis Response Circle, an Indigenous seed stewardship collective operating with a commitment to nurture Indigenous seed varieties for improved seed health and access through and beyond this pandemic.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Through this collaboratively-governed seed network, dedicated Indigenous seed leaders have come together to grow Indigenous seed varieties in the 2020 growing season to increase seed supply. Seeds generated through the Circle will be lovingly redistributed to Indigenous individuals and initiatives requiring access to their ancestral seeds for food and seed saving next year. Indigenous seed keepers and initiatives comprising this collaborative seed collective include @blackbird_medicines , Igataqan, Ininīwikistayikēwin, @kenhtekeseeds , Kete Miinakaan Kitigaanens, Mtigwaaking, and Stephen Silverbear McComber of Kahnawake Collective Impact’s Three Sisters Mound Garden initiative. This Seed Response Circle project is inspired by a project recently initiated by Sovereign Seeds’ partner network, the Indigenous Seed Keepers Network at @nativefoodalliance , who are developing an Indigenous-led Indigenous Seed Growers Cooperative south of the border.

Indigenous seed efforts and earth work is systemically undervalued, inadequately compensated, and destabilized by land displacement, environmental racism, industrial agriculture, seed commodification, and biocolonialism. Through our fundraiser for the Circle, we are striving to honour these seed keepers' vital work, and to reciprocate their community care through stipends and funding support for their gardening and seed initiative costs. Your donation to the Circle will go directly towards supporting these seed leaders. By supporting the COVID-19 Indigenous Seed Crisis Response Circle you are supporting a more just and climate-resilient future for the generations of seeds and seed keepers to come!”

“I recognize and feel with you that another really tough, emotional week passed by. It’s ok to take time to process all of these emotions. It’s ok to be sad and confused when we fail to see the much needed progress in our neighbouring country, as well as Canada portrayed in media, but be assured, progress is happening. Individual rest is needed to keep on trekking and spreading love.”

She then goes on to offer free flowers to folks who may not be able to afford them. We need more people like Thanu in the world!
