ABOUT THE LAND

When Susan and Walter moved to Barnes Creek Ranch in 1972, there was about 20 ares in production, a little house with no running water or electricity, and a log barn for square bales. The land consisted of 480 acres, a creek running through it and a cow/calf range permit. Property is on the historic Blackwater road between Quesnel and Prince George.

Over the years land has been cleared for hay production, pasture, winter cattle feeding areas and corral system. The home was built, as well as a hay barn, 2 work shops, well house, equipment shed and 2 calf shelters. Today, the ranch is 1000 acres, all of which are in the ALR and include 325 acres in hay production. The crown range consists of 15,000 acres. Currently they calf out 90 cows and background the calves over the winter for spring sale.

The soil is clay no rocks or gravel. The 325 acres in hay production is in fields free of roots and gravel. All hay fields are fenced with smooth, barbed and some electric. Dry land farming with one cut per year. The fields are not irrigated but cattle have access to an deep well, with reliable flow year round.

The ranch includes an apiary. The landowners sell their honey in local stores in Prince George and Quesnel. Because of their bees and cows, they do not use any pesticides/herbicides on their land and also have a working relationship with the forest companies not to aerial spray glyphosate on the forests within a 5 km radius that also encompasses the rangeland. Bee equipment may be available for purchase.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The landowners are ready to retire. While their son is interested in keeping the ranch in the family, they would all like to see the ranch being kept as a viable farming unit and are looking for a farmer or farming family keen to keep the land in production. Potential for housing.

The land is not serviced by BC Hydro or a phone company. There is a solar system and back up generator for electricity, and satellite for WiFi and phone.
