Workers’ compensation insurance is like a safety net for both the employer and the employees. If a worker gets injured or sick on the job, this insurance helps cover their medical expenses and a portion of their lost wages. For the farm, it’s a smart move because it provides financial protection in case of accidents, reduces the risk of costly lawsuits, and helps maintain a positive relationship with employees. Plus, it’s often a legal requirement.
It isn’t a large investment either (usually a few hundred dollars). To sign up, follow the instructions for your province:
General Liability insurance provides coverage for third-party bodily injury, property damage, and personal injury claims. This covers visitors, customers or other people interacting with your farm.
Imagine a visitor gets injured by farm equipment, or someone claiming their property was damaged by your operations. General liability insurance steps in to cover legal expenses, medical costs, and damages, preventing these incidents from becoming financial disasters for the farm.
For our program, it is important to have if your are hosting a farm tour. We may ask you to double check with your insurance company that you are covered for this kind of activity, especially if apprentices stay over night at the farm. While we appreciate the hospitality, if this is not covered by your insurance, we’ll arrange accommodations elsewhere.
