The 2024 Apprentices have had a busy season learning about regenerative farming, and are now wrapping up their time on their host farms. Jenn, our Manitoba Apprenticeship Coordinator, recently sat down with apprentice Eric Moser to hear about his season at Almost Urban Vegetables near Winnipeg.⁠
⁠
Almost Urban Vegetables is a market garden producing over 40 varieties of fresh seasonal vegetables and herbs for 80 families and a farmers' market. Their goal is to produce nourishing food following organic standards, with as little use of fossil fuel as possible.⁠

This season, Eric had fun building infrastructure like drip lines and mid-tunnels, and learning the growing habits of a diversity of herbs and veggies. He had applied for the Apprenticeship Program with the hopes of narrowing down his farming interests, and after a season of working with laying hens, now knows that he want to incorporate livestock into his future farm.⁠

Join Jared Qwustenuxun Williams, Tom Reid from the Nature Trust of BC, Jennifer Grenz from UBC Indigenous Ecology Lab, and Kristen Miskelly from Satinflower Nurseries for a field day at the Quw’utsun Estuary Food System Revitalization and Estuary Restoration Project! We will start with a plant walk, learn about the project, and enjoy a meal together. If the timing and weather align, we may get to collect some native plant seeds. Everyone is welcome to attend.⁠

Bring the energy and enthusiasm of an aspiring farmer to your operation by signing up to be a host farm in the Young Agrarians Apprenticeship Program! This program is looking for farmers and ranchers who are ready and willing to invest in the next generation of regenerative land stewards.⁠

By learning to teach, host farms will have the opportunity to watch a new farmer acquire the skills they need to get on the land and contribute to the growing movement of regenerative agriculture.⁠

Young Agrarians Apprenticeship Program host farm mentors are full-time ranchers and farmers operating regenerative agricultural operations across British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.⁠
