ABOUT THE LAND
This 6.8 acre property is tucked away in a beautiful, quiet area just outside the city of Port Alberni. The property runs east/west, with a long road frontage along the south side. A small stream towards the east side of the property runs to the south, dividing a clear and level approximately 0.5 acre available for lease from the rest of the property. This 0.5 acre is currently in grass and has been grazed by horses in the past. Municipal water is available at the field as well as wifi, power and septic hookups.
The property used to be an abbatoir, and is equipped with outbuildings include three animal shelters as well as a processing building with walk-in cooler, dry storage room, and processing room with stainless steel sinks and counters (no animal processing equipment). Power is available at the building and though the building is not currently hooked up to water it is possible to bring water to the building if needed by the leasing farmer. There is also additional shed/tool storage space available.
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
The landholders recently purchased this property with the goal of creating a wholistic and regenerative permaculture food forest and are keen to share the space with other growers. The 0.5 acre space is a great place for a leasing farmer to get started with a market garden operation. There is potential for expansion and possible collaboration in other areas of the farm (currently unmanaged spaces) including the planned food forest.
The landholders have an interest in creating a community space on the farm – involving agritourism, hosting workshops, etc – and are looking for a farmer with similar community interests. The leasing farmer is welcome to live on site, to be discussed. This opportunity is available long term, starting with an initial trial period to feel out the match.
