ABOUT THE LAND

For many years, this 8-acre property in Cobble Hill was home to a nursery business. The current landholder recently purchased this space with the goal of establishing infrastructure to support their horses, while also seeing the existing greenhouse space used to contribute to local food security. One of the greenhouses is still in use by a local grower who produces high-quality tropical plants for retail sales, while the rest of the greenhouses are ready to support new growers.

The property is composed of a combination of brush, pasture, and a plateau where the greenhouses are located. The entire property has excellent sun exposure. The landholder’s home, as well as the greenhouses, are fed by a deep well with a capacity of 25 gallons per minute. Additionally, the property has 200 amp power service and each greenhouse is connected to electricity.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

This opportunity consists of three permanent greenhouse structures, one measuring 100 x 30 feet, and two measuring 80 x 30 feet. The greenhouses are located on a graded area with full sun exposure, and each greenhouse has access to both power and water.

Having previously been used for nursery production, the ground in each greenhouse consists of packed sand that had been covered by a layer of weed cloth. As such, this opportunity would be most appropriate for nursery producers or farmers who use raised bed growing systems, rather than soil-based ones. All three of the available greenhouses have a sturdy structure, but need to have their plastic replaced in order to be ready for production. The landholder is willing to help an incoming farmer in doing so, subject to conversation.

ABOUT THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate for this opportunity would be an experienced greenhouse producer who is looking for greenhouse space to start or expand their greenhouse vegetable, flower, or nursery operation in the Cowichan Valley.

As the landholder lives on site and there is another nursery business already operating on the property, the ideal candidate would be collaborative and conscientious of shared space. Furthermore, as there is no potential for housing on the site, the ideal candidate would live nearby or would be prepared to find their own off-site accommodations.
