ABOUT THE LAND

This 25-acre farm situated in the Comox Valley has multiple portions of farmland available for lease. The farm is currently used for growing vegetables and flowers, hay, and bees as well as homes for the landholders and tenants.

About 1/4- to 1/2-acre is currently under cultivation, a mixed garden with well-established rows and irrigation set-up. The soil has been amended on an ongoing basis since 2009 and managed using no-till practices. About 3,000 garlic are in place this year, and there is a fair bit of mixed perennial fruit, vegetables and flowers already established throughout the garden. Several rows are currently under silage tarps and ready to be planted this spring. Some areas of the garden might require weeding.

Besides the established garden, there is another 1 acre of land that is currently in hay and could be turned into a market garden or a larger vegetable field. Additional land, up to 4 acres, is available and would be more suited for livestock as the soil is very rocky there.

Fencing should be checked and fortified before planting sensitive crops – 6 acres are fenced but somehow an odd deer or two are still getting in!

Water for irrigation is available from a 1/4-acre dugout fed by rainwater. There has been enough water for the current farming needs, but future production capacity will need to consider water availability.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

It’s a beautiful farm and a rare opportunity. The landholders love this land and are excited to invite a new farmer(s) in to keep the land thriving, and are open to different production types to make that happen. They would love to have a new farmer take over – growing market vegetables, fruits, and/or flowers and help maintain farm status. Pastured poultry might also be a good fit, with good predator protection.

Haying is currently done by a neighbour, and an off-site beekeeper keeps 6 hives on the farm – these activities will continue, but all ideas are up for discussion. The garden is available immediately – it will be great to have it planted for this spring!

Although an experienced farmer or gardener would make the transition easier, all farmers are welcome to start a conversation and bring their ideas forward. The landholders are committed to finding the right fit, and can accommodate the farmers’ needs and timelines. There is potential for off-grid accommodation on-site, with an existing RV and accessory buildings that can be purchased from the previous tenant.

This can be a long-term farming opportunity for a new or experienced farmer who wants to set up their farm business in the Comox Valley – a great community of diverse groups of farmers, food processors, and supporters!
