ABOUT THE LAND
Heffley Creek is a rural neighbourhood at the north end of Kamloops, only a 20 minute drive into town, with easy access to a vibrant community centred around a thriving farmers’ market. The four-plus acres available are part of a larger 35-acre property which is also in cultivation. The landholders would like to lease out 4-10 acres of available space to a farmer that is looking to improve the soil and be part of the local farming culture.
The soil on the available four acres is well-draining, holds nutrients well, and has only a bit of gravel component (testing has been done). Prior to the current landholders purchasing the property, the fields sat fallow for 4-5 years. There is a hook up for power, but it is currently turned off. There are water rights to the North Thompson River and a pump set up on this property, but water will need to be moved around the property to be accessible to a new farmer. There is fencing on the property, but it is in need of some repair. This opportunity will involve some initial elbow grease to get ready to farm, but is well worth the work!
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
The property’s landholders already have a farming operation on-site, growing and processing hops for B.C.’s booming beer industry. Their vision is to someday develop the property into a project similar to The Beer Farmers in Pemberton, including a tap room and farm gate sales. The landholders would love for an ambitious farmer to join them in this vision by making good use of the currently unused farming areas and adding to the health and vitality of the farm.
At present, the landholders are very open to receiving proposals for a variety of projects and farm types, whether that be livestock, food growing, or something else imaginative.
ABOUT THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
This property would suit a knowledgeable farmer who isn’t afraid to get their hands dirty and design a farm just the way they like it! Aspiring farmers should be experienced with infrastructure projects as well as growing, and should have a passion for regenerating the soil. It is ideal if they also have an interest in working as a complimentary part of a larger operation.
The farmer will need to access their area via the owners’ main driveway and business area, so they should be comfortable with regular interaction and communication. Housing is not available on-site, so the right farmer will need to live within commuting distance to the property.
