ABOUT THE LAND
The whole gorgeous property is just under 20 acres, partially in the ALR. Some of the land is forested, some is planted in productive permaculture and food systems and some is open fields full of potential! The water for this property comes from the municipal system and there are hydrants located at various locations for hook up, but no irrigation infrastructure is in place for the portions of the land that are not being currently farmed. The soil texture varies throughout the property and is a mixed sandy loam in some areas and more clay in others. The land is partially fenced, though not in deer fencing and while they do have some deer passing through, there has never been too much damage to crops, as they have dogs on the property.
The owner lives on the land, as well as has excellent, long term and like-minded tenants in a rental home. They utilize some land for gardens and raising poultry; chickens, ducks and turkeys.
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
The overarching goal is to have this land be a therapeutic and well-tended space that provides food, beauty and respite to the community. The land owner works as a care aid, and sees many future possibilities for use of the land in health-giving ways to vulnerable populationsand the larger community.
There is an airstream on the land underneath a hay shed which has been used by WWOOFers in the past. It could be used as seasonal accommodation for the leasing farmer, and water and power hookups could be available, as well as the possibility of installing solar panels for off grid power usage.
There are lots of opportunities for community building and using the land in various ways, including production farming, market gardening, community projects, local food organizations, partnerships with Indigenous communities. The owner is open to many discussions about creative land uses that focus on stewardship. She herself is especially keen on culinary and medicinal herbs and is interested in acquiring a press to extract oils.
There is also a greenhouse on the land that is potentially available for use. It comes with some infrastructure for aquaponic systems. There is a lovely area of the land that would be well suited for an apiary.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate will have strong values around land stewardship and use organic practices. The owner is a lovely community minded individual who has lots of experience working with people. She understands the work it takes to build relationships and maintain collaborative partnerships, and would expect the same from the leasing farmers or organizations. They will be required to make the minimum income requirements to qualify the land for Farm Tax Classification and work to insure that all paperwork and details are in place for this to occur.
