ABOUT THE LAND

On the bluffs of Coldstream overlooking picturesque Kalamalka lake, this large property has 10 acres to share with farmers who are excited about regenerative agriculture. Once an old dairy farm, the current landholders purchased this property in the 2010s and have been lovingly restoring it back to working form. 12-15 acres are currently being hayed, and the owners have further plans to plant nut trees on a steep, sloped part of the property. Parts of the property were also once planted with apple trees, but they were taken out long ago. There are still an additional 10 acres of free space that the landholders would like to see used well by emerging, regenerative farmers.

The property has very mixed terrain with some areas being steeply sloped with exposed bedrock, and other areas that are gently sloping pasture with good soil (tests needed). The property backs on to forest and currently has low cow fencing all around, some of which is currently being replaced. There is a large hay barn used by the landholders, a sizeable machine and equipment shed, and a tractor. This equipment may be available for sharing, depending on the project and farmer involved. The landholders are open to discussing another small shed, workshop, or other infrastructure. The landholders and their family live on two houses on the property.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

These landholders are driven to leasing by a strong desire to see their property well used, and to help regenerate the soil and health of the land. After many years of farming on the property (dairy and orchard), and a tough battle to eradicate thistles (!), the soil is in need of some rebuilding. The land is in the ALR and the landholders feel strongly that it be used for agricultural purposes.

ABOUT THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate would be an experienced farmer who can see the opportunity in this property. They should have the energy, finances, and commitment to help regenerate the soil and build something unique. The right farmer(s) should be good communicators and looking for a cooperative environment, as the landholders and their family live on-site and there are other farming activities going on.
