LAND OPPORTUNITY: 10 acres available for an orchard, vineyard, or ground crops – Summerland, BC

We always have new land opportunities coming into our inventory, some of which aren’t on our blog yet! Get in touch with a Land Matcher at bclmp@youngagrarians.org to learn about the latest opportunities and to access free B.C. Land Matching Program services in your region.

ABOUT THE LAND

This beautiful 30-acre property in the hills on the edge of Summerland has been in the landholder’s family for four generations. The property was previously an orchard, but the land is no longer in production and is ready for a new farmer to take up the mantle, while the landholders continue to enjoy their home.

There is anywhere from two to 10 acres of farming space available, plus a bit of extra space to expand, if the incoming farmer is interested in breaking and clearing new ground. The growing space is split between two fields, each with their own road-access gate. The fields are largely flat with sandy loam soil, some gentle slopes, and full sun exposure – well suited for many different types of crops!

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

This is an excellent opportunity to grow ground crops or run an orchard or vineyard operation in Summerland! The apple, cherry and peach trees from the previous orchard were removed in recent years, but much of the infrastructure is still in place. Before removal, the trees had produced approximately 750,000 pounds of apples and 40,000 pounds of cherries.

There are irrigation connection points throughout the property, and a sprinkler system is set up in one area. The property is partially fenced, with some sections surrounded with electric fencing. Both the fencing and irrigation system may need some love, as they have been inactive for a few years.

There is also some storage space available, but the landholders would request that no large equipment be kept on-site for extended periods of time. There is a sprayer fill station and a small, heated greenhouse which could also be made available to the farmer.

The landholders are open to any type of production practices, provided that the farmer will take good care of the land and respect the landholder’s family’s legacy there.

ABOUT THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate for this opportunity would have some experience managing an orchard, vineyard, or ground crop operation and would be ready to jump into farming as soon as possible, as the landholders would love to see someone on the land soon.

There is no housing currently available on-site, so the ideal candidate would live or work within a manageable commuting distance from Summerland. The landholders will continue to live on the land, so good communication and openness to sharing the space will be key.
