ABOUT THE LAND
Hilltop Farm Union Bay is a fenced 10 acre hobby farm gently sloping between the Old and New Island Highways in the foothills of the Beaufort Range. Half the acreage is kept as a woodlot and grazing area for sheep, the other half is cleared and cross fenced. The farm was established in the 1950’s as a dairy farm after being logged years earlier. The old dairy barn has been converted to a 4 stall livestock barn and hay shed.
The property, accessible from an unpaved driveway from McLeod Road, includes a 120 sq.ft. chicken barn and 200 sq.ft. turkey barn, both with lights and power. In addition, there is another 240 sq.ft. barn and three recently built loafing sheds for large livestock, but without power. There are several smaller fenced in sheds scattered throughout the property, as well as two duck ponds and a small orchard with pear, walnut, apple, plum and cherry trees.
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
The owners moved to the property in 2003 and have raised pigs, sheep, chickens, turkeys, ducks, trout, and geese. Over the last fifteen years they have gained a lot of livestock knowledge and farm tools. As the owners are getting older, looking after the land and animals is becoming increasingly difficult, so they are now looking for a person or persons, experienced or not, who might be interested in working an established farm.
There is lots of small equipment, (incubators, electric fencers, dishes, buckets, trays, etc) available for use, but no tractor. The property has not been used for a market garden previously, but there is a supply of manure if someone wanted to try. The owners would like to continue maintaining the farm organically, and ask that no inorganic pesticides be brought onto the property.
This can be a long term opportunity for the responsible people who are a good fit, with potential for the farmer to bring their own accommodation onto the property.
