ABOUT THE LAND

Situated in Nanoose Bay on Vancouver Island, this land boasts 60 years of dedicated family farming history. The 30-acre property was home to mixed vegetables and chickens and featured a bountiful farm stand that was a gem for the neighbourhood. The farmers who brought this property to life are now retired, and the land is in the hands of a new, young family, who wish to continue cultivating this beautiful property.

Approximately 1 acre of land, previously the chicken run, is ready to be planted. The soil is moist and fertile, though a bit weedy right now. There is another smaller section by a newly planted orchard that will also be available to the leasing farmer. The previous landholders had a very productive vegetable garden – only about 2,500 sq. ft in size but which produced abundantly for the farm stand over the years. The use of this garden may also be negotiated as part of the agreement.

Irrigation water can be pumped from the year-round creek (licenced) or from a well (not yet licenced but can be). Perimeter fencing is in progress and will be installed by the spring of 2024.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The current landholders have been on the property since the end of 2022 – building a home for the family and a barn for their growing herd of horses and ponies. This land is to be a long-term family home and farm.

The landholders went all-in last year – planting big gardens and establishing a new orchard of mixed fruit trees. It got a little out of hand, they admit, and they are looking to share the bounty! This year, they’re looking forward to sharing the space with someone who can use the land to its full potential.

The landholders are open to different types of production – cut flowers or mixed vegetables would be beautiful, and small livestock like sheep, pigs, and chickens are most welcome. Greenhouses and orchards are also up for discussion. Fruit harvests from the established kiwi vines and the new orchard may be worked into the agreement if the farmer is interested.

This farm is a short drive from the town of Parksville, with easy access to housing options and marketing opportunities. It is a popular seaside resort town, attracting enthusiastic customers all summer long.

The land is available starting in the 2024 season for a long term lease for the right fit. The ideal farmer(s) would be someone who has farming experience and can help the family bring the land back into production. Any help with regaining farm status would be so appreciated. Most importantly, they are looking for like-minded young farmer(s) to enjoy the land with!
