We always have new land opportunities coming into our inventory, some of which aren’t on our blog yet! Get in touch with a Land Matcher at bclmp@youngagrarians.org to learn about the latest opportunities and to access free B.C. Land Matching Program services in your region.

ABOUT THE LAND

Nestled in the heart of the Cowichan Valley, 1 acre of arable land are available at Providence Farm in Duncan, BC!

Scenically situated on a beautiful 400-acre property, Providence Farm is a therapeutic working farm and registered charity offering a variety of farm- and nature-based programming. The available 1 acre are part of a 15-acre field, separate from the rest of the farm and program spaces. The field is partially fenced and accessible through its own separate entrance from the road. The Providence Farm team uses some of this field for their own production (including a large crop of garlic), but there is plenty of space for more farming.

The available land has been farmed before and is arable, but may require some initial rock picking and amendments, as it has been fallow for some years. A tractor is available by request, operated by the site manager. Water is supplied from an irrigation pond up the hill, and is accessible through a hydrant in the field. Provided it is used responsibly, this water source should be sufficient for all farming activities.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

This is an excellent opportunity to start or expand a farm business in a convenient location! Given that the site manager and agriculture team already have their hands full (with many gardens, and flocks of sheep and hens), they are happy for another farmer to make use of the space. Although the land is on a working farm, the leasing farmer will operate independently.

Providence Farm is home to Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association, three alternative schools, Cowichan Folk Guild and CowOp (an online marketplace for local food). The farm serves individuals with brain injuries, developmental diversity, neurodivergence, physical disabilities, mental health concerns and age-related illnesses, and also hosts students, interns and volunteers. This is a great chance to grow a farming venture alongside a vibrant community!

The close proximity to the city of Duncan means easy to access to markets and customers. The incoming farmer could also apply to sell through CowOp, for an additional year-round sales channel.

ABOUT THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

This is an ideal opportunity for a self-sufficient, start-up farmer who wants to give farming a serious try. Given that there are no accommodations available on the land, the ideal candidate would have access to their own housing.

If you’re looking to start a market garden in Duncan, look no further!
