B.C. Land Matching Program British Columbia Land Thompson Okanagan

LAND OPPORTUNITY: 1.5 acres for ground crops, tree fruits, bees, or poultry – Oliver, BC

We always have new land opportunities coming into our inventory, some of which aren’t on our blog yet! Get in touch with a Land Matcher at bclmp@youngagrarians.org to learn about the latest opportunities and to access free B.C. Land Matching Program services in your region.

ABOUT THE LAND

Located in the sunny town of Oliver, with easy access to markets in the surrounding Similkameen Valley, this 1.5-acre property is available for a variety of farm operations!

The land is currently fallow, but the property was previously ran as an intensive biodiverse food forest farm featuring a wide variety of crops, including 130+ fruit and nut trees. The landholder would love to see the property returned to food production, with a strong preference for practices that prioritize biodiversity and companion planting.

The growing area is flat, with full sun exposure, making it a great fit for heat-loving crops. There are still some fruit trees on-site, including peach, apricot, pear, three pecans, three hazelnuts, and a Saskatoon – all available for care and harvest by the incoming farmer.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

This property presents a great blank canvas opportunity for a wide variety of farming operations, including but not limited to veggies, tree fruits, flowers, nursery stock, poultry, and bees!

There are multiple storage buildings available, including four outbuildings with access to power. Previously, the buildings were used as a dehydrating shed, a woodshop, and storage, and could be converted into a cooler or insulated garage. A small barn and chicken coop are also available for use. The landholder is also open to the installation of additional infrastructure, such as greenhouses.

The available space comes with access to power, and irrigation water is supplied by the town of Oliver. There are two irrigation connection points, and the landholder is open to discussing the expansion of the irrigation system, if needed.

Some tools and equipment may be available, including a push-mower, an electric rototiller, and an entire workshop’s worth of woodworking tools.

ABOUT THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate for this opportunity would be a farmer who is keen on biodiverse farming practices, with a preference for organic-leaning farming practices. The landholder lives on-site, so good communication and a willingness to share the space will be key.

The ideal candidate would live within comfortable commuting distance of Oliver, as there is no housing available at the moment. In the future, there may be space for a farmer to reside in a trailer, with water, power, and sanitation facilities available.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you’d like to learn more about this opportunity!
