ABOUT THE LAND
The property is located in South Saanich close by the Victoria General Hospital and is about 8 acres of various terrain including Garry oak meadow and pasture. Many years ago this land was part of a dairy farm which was subsequently sold and subdivided into individual properties. Our property was once occupied by sheep, horses and chickens., and is now unused pasture. There is a stable with electricity and running water and room for storage of tools.
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
The landowners are seeking someone to farm about 1.2 acres of fully fenced land using organic practices to maintain the integrity of the soil. The soil is mostly dark moist soil, rich from mowing but no haying. Possibilities include but are not limited to vegetables, flowers, herbs, small livestock etc. The landowners are open to a new vision and hope to provide the space for it to happen!
Further possibilities include renting our small tractor, renting cultivating equipment, setting out a small roadside farm stand, using a further acre of the property for grazing, and/or using a 1+ acre portion of the Garry oak meadow for a food forest (permaculture).
There’s no set requirement, but if it works for you we would love to get farm status and have limited access to the area for educating visiting kids (as part of a nature/agriculture education program).
