Direct Farm Manitoba is a cooperative which advances the interests of member markets and farmers who direct market farm products to consumers by advocating on their behalf and connecting them to economic opportunities.
Direct Farm Manitoba is seeking an Event Coordinator and Liaison to organize the annual Direct Farm Marketing Conference, as well as to strengthen the local food sector working on various projects as needed throughout the year. The candidate will be responsible for every aspect of the event, from initial planning to financial and evaluative reporting, under the guided mentorship of the Direct Farm Manitoba Board of Directors and staff. The bulk of the hours will take place between August – November, and January during the employment term.
With measured goals, Direct Farm Manitoba will train and support a capable candidate to work independently to facilitate a comprehensive and dynamic conference that will strengthen the local food sector through education, networking, and advocacy.
Starting Date: April 1, 2019
End Date: March 31, 2020
Wage: 480 hours @ $16/hour
Requirements: Eligible for employment under Career Focus Program
- 30 years or younger when starting the position
- unemployed or underemployed
- have graduated from a university, college, DEP, or CEGEP
- have not participated in any other Youth Employment Strategy program (Agricultural Youth Green Jobs Initiative and/or Career Focus Program)
- a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.

Employment Activities:
70% Event Coordination – Direct Farm Marketing Conference February 2020
- Attend all Conference Committee meetings;
- Assist in conference location booking and logistics;
- Assist in grant writing, leveraging further conference funds;
- Facilitate trade show, vendors and sponsors;
- Assist in the development of conference program content (speakers, workshops, events, swag and other);
- Assist in food procurement logistics and chef liaisons;
- Assist in outreach events within the conference schedule
- Facilitate conference marketing via social media, facilitate online ticketing;
- Managing day-of conference registrations, attendee requirements and problem-solving;
- Assist in tracking budget and financial recording;
- Update conference reports for the board.
20% Marketing & Outreach
- Facilitate website updates and outreach;
- Assist in farm profiles and farmer’s market info and photos.
10% Training, Evaluation, and Reporting
- Attend monthly board meetings (First Tuesday evening of every month except June, July, and August);
- Meet with Board Committees throughout the year as assigned;
- Invoice the Board 6x / year;
- Other duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate will:
- Be available for all events and meetings
- Be organized and detail-oriented
- Have high-level communication skills
- Be interested in networking and gaining industry contacts
- Understand the basic requirements for this position, including some experience with event planning, coordination, and financial recording
- Excel at time management and working independently;
- Understand and further the mandate and objectives of Direct Farm Manitoba
