ABOUT Ravensong Seeds & Herbals
Ravensong Seeds & Herbals is a small farm and home business producing herb seeds for organic growing, nursery plants, and herbal products such as tinctures, salves, and hydrosols. All seeds, as well herbs for our products, are grown on our two acre property with a focus on stewardship practices.
After a decade of attending farmers markets, Ravensong now focuses mainly on selling through their online store. This year the farm plans to reopen their small herb plant nursery for plant sales locally through the growing season.
The farm is not certified organic, but does not use any type of synthetic chemical in production practices. We don’t do a lot of fertilizing because of the types of crops we grow do not require it, but we do harvest seaweed and also produce our own chicken manure. We grow a diversity of pollinator plants and try to encourage a healthy little ecosystem in our gardens.
DESIRED QUALITIES
We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated self-starter who is passionate about working hard, living life in a meaningful way, and of course, herbs! We are willing to train in all aspects of this position but previous farm work is definitely an asset.
Some of the desired qualities we are looking for:
- Comfortable working in all types of weather
- Physically fit and able to lift 40lbs comfortably
- Able to work well independently and in groups
- Adept at learning a wide variety of new tasks quickly
- Willingness to work hard and efficiently
- Good communication skills, able to give and receive feedback
- Eager to learn and make the most of the opportunity
- Strong interesting in farming, especially herb growing
- Strong interest in herbal medicine and wellness
INTERNSHIP TASKS
This position primarily focuses on farm work, though the various work-day tasks will also include work in our apothecary and our office:
- General farm labour (digging, weeding, watering etc)
- Mowing and trimming
- Plant propagation, planting
- Harvesting and processing herbs
- Gathering and cleaning seeds
- Preparing herbal medicines (mainly tinctures)
- Packaging seeds
- Filling seed and product orders
INSTRUCTION & EDUCATION
This live-on-site internship at Ravensong offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the various aspects of a small herb farm, seed and herbal product business. The intern will work along side and be provided training by owner Jessy (15+ years herb growing experience), and assistant manager Harmony (8+ years herb growing experience). Time will be set aside once per week for a materia medica lesson as well as other herbal topics such as medicine making. This training will be scheduled in and offered to the live-on-site intern along with a group of seasonal interns that work one day per week on the farm through the growing season.
The intern may wish to attend our Herbal Apprenticeship Program, an 8 month long course in herbal medicine taking place on the herb farm (April-Oct). If so, an additional work-trade may be arranged. Please express interest when applying.
ADDITIONAL LEARNING RESOURCES
We have many books that can be lent out on herbalism and herb growing.
ROOM & BOARD
Accommodation is provided in separate quarters. The space is a small but stylish and well equipped with a kitchenette, dishes, bathroom, table, bedding, bed, wifi etc. The unit is attached to the main house, but is self-contained with its own entrance. It was previously used an an airbnb rental.
INTERNSHIP DETAILS
Term: March 1st -October 31st 2023. The work term can be flexible for the right candidate.
Hours per week: 28 hours per week (Monday – Thursday 9am-4pm)
Wage: $18/hr
Compensation includes herbs and veggies from the garden, and farm fresh eggs from our chickens.
A portion of the wage will be traded for accommodation.
