NOTES FROM THE FIELD: Our Manitoba Apprenticeship Coordinator, Jenn, recently sat down with apprentice Deirdre Madill to learn about their busy season at Dunrea Farming Company. ⁠
⁠
Dunrea Farming Company is spearheaded by Kara Burrell with support from her spouse Brian Meaud, who owns and operates a 4th generation grain farm. They grow a variety of vegetables, garlic, and fiber plants, and operate and attend two summer markets.⁠
⁠
When she's not weeding, harvesting, and looking after a variety of animals, Deirdre enjoys working at the Boissevain Farmer’s Market with her mentor Kara, where she gets to connect with regulars and build bridges between her retail experience and farming.⁠

Exciting news! The National Farmers Union has laun

Exciting news! The National Farmers Union has launched THE EXCHANGE - a new cohort-centered national program to help maximize the long-term success of equity deserving farmers in Canadian agriculture, through access to staff support, funding for training, grant-writing support, mentorship, networking, a centralized Resource Hub online, and more. ⁠
⁠
Equity-deserving farmers include, but are not limited to, Indigenous farmers; Black and other racialized farmers; women farmers; youth farmers; 2SLGBTQI+ farmers, farmers with disabilities; and farmers in Official Language Minority Communities; and all farmworkers in these same groups.⁠

Applications for the first cohort are open until Sept. 27th, 2024 at 12pm EST. The first cohort starts in October 2024. Applications for the second cohort will be accepted in Jan/Feb 2025.⁠

Join us on September 22nd for a full-day farm tour of two innovative Creston farms that have been working hard to reduce their carbon emissions and improve the energy efficiency of their farm infrastructure. This event will include a morning farm tour at Full Circle Farm, a potluck lunch, and an afternoon farm tour of Cartwheel Farm.⁠

In addition to all infrastructure innovations, both Full Circle Farm and Cartwheel Farm are dedicated to their soil’s health, using low/no till methods to build and protect the carbon in their soil. This tour will be a rich learning opportunity with lots of discussion on how we can reduce fossil fuel use on farms, sequester more carbon in our soils, and adapt our farming practices for a changing climate.⁠

LAND OPPORTUNITY: A beautiful 25-acre farm is available in Barriere, BC for livestock, vegetables, bees and more! The property comes equipped with a chicken coop with fenced runs, two animal shelters, two sheds that hold feed, fencing and farming supplies, an open front two-bay tractor shed and a fully stocked shop with a large inventory of carpentry and mechanical tools. There is also large equipment on-site such as a tractor and a couple of quads. All of the infrastructure and supplies would be available to the prospective farmer. For housing, a small cabin could potentially be constructed on the property, and the landholder also has a travel trailer that may be available.
