Full Time Employment or Apprenticeship Wanted: Searching for Biodynamic/Organic Farm work in BC

Posted by Michalina Hunter on October 02, 2020

Hi there! My name is Imogen and I’m looking for work or to join an apprenticeship program in BC from now, or to start in the 2021 spring season.

I’m from the UK and currently hold a working/holiday visa for Canada. Because of the Covid situation my plans to travel have been somewhat delayed! This is an unusual time (to say the least) for all of us to be facing right now, however I’m keen to begin my time living in Canada and put my visa to good use!

I have spent the last 9 years travelling around the world, mainly as a volunteer, contributing to many projects and organisations in the organic/permaculture/sustainable living arena. I’ve loved it, learnt and re-learnt a lot, and thoroughly enjoying being a part of different communities, each with such unique qualities and visions. It’s shown me what I want for myself and how I want to show up for others and the planet equally.

I completed my PDC several years ago and since then have sought out sustainability and conservation projects and jobs where I can live in community and be working outside with nature as much as possible. I’ve worked with families, farms, communities and NGO’s and have gathered a range of skills and beautiful memories during each experience.

My most recent adventure took me back to New Zealand (I lived in NZ in 2015/16 on a working/holiday visa too) where I worked as a market gardener farm hand on a biodynamic farm on Aotea Island, Auckland, for six months.

This was incredible, and a blessing during the global situation at the moment, as I was not only in a very safe place, but, because I had to stay put I was given a wonderful opportunity to really immerse myself in the work and community there. The farm produced a huge range of crops, both fruit and vegetables, and delivered veggie boxes to the community on the island. Living there I felt more at home than I have anywhere else I’ve been before, and it dawned on me that this is the life and work I am really suited to.

So now, I am keen to find myself a similar set up in Canada and I’m ready to commit myself to this way of life, establishing myself as a farmer. I’m hoping to either find full time employment or an apprenticeship at a market garden/biodynamic/organic farm, where I can live on the property and dive into pushing my learning curve. I’m particularly interested in expanding from crops to working with animals (preferably cows, sheep and goats) as it has been on my list to combine skills and knowledge of arable and animal husbandry together for some time now!

I’m looking to join a place, where I can become more deeply woven into the organic food community and to live and work with people who hold the same ethics and values as my own; for hands on work, for simple, rustic living, enjoying nourishing food and relationships to the land, to supporting local community, and to be a part of a team who truly enjoy their work.

If you think I’d be a good fit for you, or if you know of anyone seeking an enthusiastic and hardworking soul, then please reach out!

I look forward to hearing from you!

Take care, Imogen
