Big Rock Ranch in 100 Mile House, BC is seeking Farm Hands for the 2020 season!
Big Rock Ranch
Big Rock Ranch is a 148-acre farm, a short 15 minute drive from the historic town of 100 Mile House, in Buffalo Creek BC. Here we grow many varieties of fruits and vegetables on 1 acre, raise heritage chickens for eggs, grow mushrooms, care for our 2 hives of honey bees, have 3 lovely horses, 2 awesome farm dogs and a fierce little kitty. We sell our produce at the South Cariboo Farmers Market and to local restaurants/grocery stores from Spring to Fall every year.
Big Rock Ranch is a family run farm where sustainability and ecological practices are at its core. We believe strongly in keeping our food as close to its source as nature intended, with a large focus on animal welfare and soil health. We feel strongly about building community, our local economy and supporting it by investing locally. We focus on raising heritage chickens free range rotationally on pasture, invest in the health of our soils with low till practices and lots of compost, and are focused on environmentally aware farming practices. We are not certified organic as of yet but plan to follow through on the certification process and currently use organic methods on farm.
We are looking for someone who has a good work ethic, isn’t afraid of hard physical work, and is willing to work in all weather; someone who can work in a team as well as independently and can be self motivated when it comes to completing tasks. Experience working on a farm, with farm machinery, and carpentry skills are all great assets but not necessary. Ideally looking for someone who’s invested and interested in farming as a whole.
On a week to week basis we will be prepping beds, seeding, transplanting, cultivating, pruning, harvesting, packing, selling at markets, making deliveries, building farm projects, rotationally moving our chickens, prepping/growing mushrooms, checking in on our bee hives, etc.
Term: We are looking to fill 1-2 positions starting March 2019 for a full season of work from March 2020-October 2020, with an option to stay on living at the farm throughout the off season.
Hours: Depending on what we worked out for hours they could be 4-8 hrs daily, 5 days a week.
Wage: We’re currently offering full room, board and training in exchange for 5 hrs of work a day, plus 3 more hours per day with pay at $13.85/hr. We also have an option to take on an off-farm job working at our friend’s local brewery part-time as a server and/or cook.
