Shannon Dairy 1988 ltd in Port Alberni, Vancouver Island, BC is seeking to hire a permanent Milker/ herds person!
ABOUT Shannon Dairy 1988 ltd
The farm is a 5th generation family dairy farm, situated in the centre of Vancouver island. We milk 180 Holsteins and are one of the few grazing dairy farms . The farm is totally self contained with no animals coming on to it. We grow our own forage on 800 acres and have our own equipment to do the harvesting.
We believe in being environmentally responsible. The farm sits on the banks of the Stamp river which has a world famous salmon run. There 3 major fish steams running through the property and we operate a small coho hatchery on the farm. The farm is not organic (as we do use fertilizers) but most of the practices we do are very organic.
We would like to find a young person who loves cows and wants to make this a lifetime venture. The herdsman who currently has the job is 75 years old and has worked here for 45 years raising a family.
The job is milking, record keeping, and breeding. The person must be able to handle a split shift 3:30-8am and 3-6pm with 4 and a half days on 2 and a half days off. Also dealing with treating cow issues.
