We farm at the picturesque privately-owned Cline/Westwood Farm in South Nanaimo. Established in 1864, this is one of the oldest farms in the Nanaimo region.
Growing Opportunities Farm Community Co-op believes in a community-based food system that is equitable, empowering and capable of regenerating the land through hands-on opportunities for people of all skills and abilities.
Our projects celebrate diversity and strive to inspire collaboration through the combined contributions of individuals in our work force, community organizations and a growing base of volunteers.
We follow organic growing practices but are not certified organic.

JOB TASKS
Farming and Agriculture
As a team member, you will work with the Farm Manager to:
- Provide support, supervision and direction for hands-on activities of volunteers and community groups integrated into the production cycle such as seed saving, harvesting, processing and storage, composting and winterizing the fields.
- The Farm Gate Crate is our seasonal Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Box, offered through the harvest season. In this role, you will
-help produce, harvest, wash, sort and prepare produce for distribution to the Farm Gate Crate, Farmers’ Markets and direct sales
– produce pick lists in coordination with the Farm Market & Distribution Coordinator for Farm Gate Crate, direct sales and farmers markets
– manage the harvesting of produce for Farm Gate Crates
– coordinate the packing of Farm Gate Crates
Community Engagement and Education
- Connect and coordinate with volunteer groups, school groups, community partners and work experience participants who want to participate at the farm.
- Facilitate and design community engagement events, workshops, tours, volunteer days hosted at the community farms to be inclusive of people with diverse abilities.
- Collaborate with the volunteer(s) managing Growing Opportunities’ social media accounts to help share good news stories (e.g., images, testimonials, stories) and spread awareness in the community.
Inclusion and Accessibility
- Manage a diverse farm crew to ensure the successful production of produce headed for local markets and our Farm Gate Crate Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Box.
- Implement strategies that capitalize on the unique skills of program participants and ensure there is meaningful integration between workers and volunteers on the farm sites, with opportunities for peer-to-peer mentorship, collaboration and synergy.
JOB DETAILS
Term: To start as soon as possible.
Hours per week: 25-35 hours/week. Weekend work required.
Wage: $22-25/hour, depending on experience. Mileage is provided if use of own vehicle is required. Sorry, room and board is not available.
