You’re invited to a Farm Tour and Potluck BBQ at Springer Farm near Foam Lake, Saskatchewan!

Join Young Agrarians and apprentices from Manitoba and Saskatchewan to learn about rotational grazing for healthy soils, discover how to make compost extract (which is different from compost tea!), and explore a regenerative leafcutter bee enterprise. Whether you’re a grass nerd, new to ranching, or simply curious about grazing systems, this tour is for you.

Springer Farm operates a 200-head cow-calf and yearling heifer operation alongside a thriving leafcutter bee enterprise, with bees released into alfalfa fields in July. The farm also produces alfalfa seed and intercrops while making vermicast and compost extracts to support the crops as they grow. An expanding worm farm and diverse cover crops are used to build healthy soils  and reduce reliance on synthetic fertilizers.

Join us to explore regenerative practices, and see how diverse farm enterprises can work together to build healthier soils, ecosystems, and communities!

WHEN: August 9, 2026 | 2pm – 6pm  

LOCATION: Treaty 4 Territory | Winthorpe, Foam Lake, SK (coordinates: 51.526502, -103.421225)

This farm is located on the traditional and ancestral lands of the Cree, Blackfoot/Niitsítapi, Alexis Nakota Sioux, Atikameksheng Anishnawbek and Plains Cree, who have stewarded these lands since time immemorial. We recognize their deep and ongoing relationship with the land. 

DIRECTIONS: Travel south of Tufnell for 6 miles (~10 km) to the curve. Instead of following the curve, continue west for 2 miles (~3 km). Then turn south and travel 1¾ miles (~3 km). The farm is located on the east side of the road.

WHAT TO BRING:

• Clothing for the weather, including sturdy shoes for a field walk
• Following the tour, there will be a Potluck BBQ. Springer Farm will provide hamburgers and smokies. Bring veggies, salad, side dish or dessert to share if you plan to stay, including a serving utensil (please include a little card with ingredients for folks with food sensitivities). Bring something that can be served “as is” and does not need warming up or prep.
• Your own plate, cutlery, and cup for the potluck
• A lawn chair or picnic blanket (optional)

About the Farm

Kris Springer and his wife, Jay, operate a mixed grain and cattle farm where biodiversity is central to everything they do. They grow a diverse mix of cash crops, cover crops for grazing, and livestock feed while using regenerative farming practices to build healthy soils. Their management includes crop rotations, intensive grazing of annual forages, and compost extract applications to enhance soil biology.   

Their regenerative approach focuses on building resilience, promoting ecological function, and strengthening the long-term sustainability of their farm. To extend the growing season and maintain year-round soil cover, they integrate annual and biennial forages, putting the six soil health principles of regenerative agriculture into practice across their operation. 

Kris and Jay returned to Foam Lake from Alberta to farm in the community where they grew up, and are raising three children. They are committed to strengthening their local community and sharing the value of regenerative agriculture with fellow farmers.
