On August 22, 2026, Young Agrarians gathered with apprentices, new and aspiring farmers, and folks curious about farming at Triple Lyoness Farm near Dapp, Alberta.
Our hosts Rod, Janet, Briana, and Andria Carlyon along with their apprentices, Lauren and Hannah, led us on a tour of their mixed livestock operation in Westlock County.

We first went to see the chicken coop and run, where Lauren gave us an explanation of the different breeds and how yolk colour can be affected by what the hens eat. We then moved onto the pasture where the broilers (meat chickens) were earlier in the season. We learned about the way they are moved on the pasture so they are able to graze on plants and bugs. Their manure is spread as they are moved, nourishing the pasture. We got a rundown of how the chickens are processed and the equipment used.
After the chicken talk, we moved onto a low-stress livestock demonstration where Briana gave us an explanation of some techniques that can be used to keep cattle calm when moving them. Our apprentices then demonstrated how to separate out steers in a corral using just flags and their movements, to prevent stress to the animals.

For lunch, we enjoyed a delicious potluck including burgers made with the farm’s own beef.
After lunch, we travelled to another field called the “Thirty-Year Steer Pasture,” which features a riparian area protection project, solar water systems and an intensive grazing rotation with 200 head of steers. Rod, Briana, and Hannah shared how the farm stewards and protects the ecosystems around them.
Thanks so much to our apprentices Lauren and Hannah, as well as the Carlyon family for hosting us and for showing us what a thriving multi-species and multi-generational farm can look like.
