"It has been so fulfilling to take part in the Young Agrarians Apprenticeship Program this year. For six months I apprenticed at Almost Urban Vegetables just outside of Winnipeg, where I was able to learn so much about growing food from Marilyn and Bruce. Though I had daydreamed about a food-growing lifestyle for many years, this was my first full season of work on a farm. My days on the farm were brimming with fresh air, beckoning greenery, problem-solving, and sunshine. I am very grateful for all of the vitamin D that I was able absorb as I worked with a group of people who all had common visions for stewardship for the land.⁠
⁠
For somebody wanting to dip their toes or dive into agriculture, this Apprenticeship Program is an amazing option. Not only was it a paid work placement, but I was also instantly welcomed into a wonderful network of regenerative farmers in the province. The monthly farm tours throughout were very eye-opening about the different ways that an organic farm/garden operation on the prairies can look like. Our coordinator Sara was so accommodating, offering fascinating resources and support throughout the season. The skills that I learned ranged from practical on-farm skills to interpersonal development.⁠
⁠
Now at the end of this season, I truly feel that I have a solid foundation from which to grow. My perception of farming has expanded to encompass possibilities and ways of living that I had never previously considered. Farming can look a lot of different ways, and I find it exciting to think of all the different hats that a food worker can wear. I am very inspired to continue on the path of learning about land stewardship."⁠

Applications for the 2025 season are open for host farms across British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.⁠

Here are a few of the host farms offering apprenticeships this season:⁠

🌾A Rocha (South Surrey, BC): This farm is a part of the BC Environmental Centre and operates as a 2.5-acre no-till farm within a 27-acre living lab of diverse ecosystems, offering a 170+ member CSA, farmers market, farm stand, and restaurant sales while supporting conservation, research, and environmental education.⁠
⁠
🌾Steel Pony Farm (Red Deer, AB): An 8-acre market garden in Central Alberta that grows nutrient-dense vegetables using diverse tillage practices, they offer a CSA program featuring their produce and a variety of local products, creating a whole-food hub.⁠
⁠
🌾Terra Nostra Farm (Powell River, BC): A 14-acre certified organic farm with 3 acres of intensive vegetable production and a focus on supplying high-quality produce to the local community through shops, markets, restaurants, and a CSA program. Committed to soil health and innovation, the farm blends traditional hand cultivation with experiments in no-till methods.⁠

🌾The Homestead (Goodfare, AB): A certified organic farm in Peace Country, founded by Lisa and Donovan Kitt, who specialize in producing and direct marketing eggs, vegetables, microgreens, pork, beef, and chickens. Working closely with Donovan’s father, they are building toward Certified Regenerative status, offering apprentices hands-on experience in all aspects of running a mixed regenerative farm.⁠
