Calling all new farmers (years 1-10)! Time to get your survey on! Submit your feedback by February 22nd, 2019 to the B.C. Ministry of Agriculture and let them know what your needs as a farmer are. MEET YOUR CENTRAL B.C. COORDINATOR: Robin Hunt is a market gardener from the Cariboo Region of B.C. She is excited to join the Young Agrarians team and work with farmers around the region. She currently farms with her husband Johan Bos at Big Rock Ranch in Buffalo Creek, B.C. Here they raise free range heritage chickens rotationally on pasture, run a mixed fruit/vegetable market garden and tiny home B&B, with a large focus on animal welfare and soil health. They feel strongly about building community, their local economy and supporting it by investing locally. 2016 Census of Agriculture Results Are In!

Farm data nerds, the day is finally here! Canada’s 2016 Census of Agriculture results have arrived—along with some interesting shifts in the sector. Here are some highlights of the good, the bad, and the promising: Farmers are getting older—and younger Farmers 55+ is the fastest growing age group, with the average national age of operators edging up from 54 in 2011 to 55. This trend parallels the general population. On the other hand, this year we saw an increase in the number of farm operators under 35. In the 1930s, over thirty percent of the population was involved in food production. Today, farmers represent only 1.6 percent of the population and have an average age of 54. Seeking farmers 55 years of age and younger who have farmed along northern BC’s Highway 16 corridor for 10 years or less to participate in research on farmers’ motivations. UNBC graduate student, Mike Dewar is conducting research on the motivations and success of new and young farmers and ranchers in Northern BC’s Highway 16 Corridor.  He is currently seeking potential research participants.
