EVENT RECAP: Farm Tour and Feast at Ebsa Silga’s Farm

On a hot day in August, a beautiful community of people came out to visit and tour Ebsa Silga’s farm just outside of Edmonton. Ebsa immigrated from Ethiopia in 2014 and over the last couple of years has started growing and experimenting with vegetables. Come experience Indigenous food system revitalization and estuary restoration at the Quw’utsun estuary in Duncan, BC!  Join Jared Qwustenuxun Williams, Tom Reid from the Nature Trust of BC, Jennifer Grenz from UBC Indigenous Ecology Lab, and Kristen Miskelly from Satinflower Nurseries for a field day at the Quw’utsun Estuary Food System Revitalization and Estuary Restoration Project! On August 25, twenty seven people came out to Winnow Seed Co. to spend the morning learning about organic seed production. Owner Julie Fletcher gave us a tour of her seed farm, where she grows over 80 varieties of open-pollinated vegetables, herbs, and native plants. The farm is located on an upper bench of the small agricultural community of Krestova, BC.  Julie has three separate growing fields surrounded by forest, slightly isolated from one another to prevent cross-pollination between crops. Join us on September 22nd for a full-day farm tour of two innovative Creston farms that have been working hard to reduce their carbon emissions and improve the energy efficiency of their farm infrastructure. Twenty curious farmers and customers gathered on the sunny afternoon of August 10th for a tour of Rosy Farm, a 27 acre organically managed Haskap farm north of Edmonton, North Saskatchewan River and Treaty 6 territory. The tour was hosted by Andrew Rosychuk, the owner of Rosy Farms.
